She looked at Elaine. "Darling, I hope you will come with me as First Adjutant. You've been the best anyone could be in your post here and I truly want you with m if you'll come," Kate said with a wide smile. "By the way, there'd be a promotion in it for you, too."

Elaine told her how happy she would be to keep working with Kate and that she still was grateful for Kate's bringing her to this unit after Elaine's years commanding Hergolia Camp.

Kate spent some time emptying her desk and packing her personal things. Then she had 1SG Wendy summoned. When Wendy arrived, she congratulated Kate as the new Chief of Staff and told her how much she admired her personally.

"Coming from you, Wendy," Kate glowed, "that's the best present anyone could give me." They hugged.

"Elaine's going with me to be my Adjutant," Kate informed her. "Until the new unit commandant is appointed, I want you to hold things down here. If you need any approvals--I know you won't need any help[ in running things--just call me or Elaine." "May I ask who you might have in mind for your job here, Chief?" Wendy asked.

"I won't announce anything until next week," Kate answered warmly, "but I do have CPT Nicole in mind. She has her ups and downs, but she's very bright and I think she's settled down and has been doing well out at ...

"I'm very happy with her," Wendy said, "and I respect too that you recognized her abilities and helped her advance in so many ways despite what was clearly bad behavior on her part and acts involving you that might have earned her dismissal from the service. I've been here a long time, Kate, and I knew you knew what you were about when we first met after you were commissioned. I know you'll do really well as our new Chief."

"Thanks, Wendy," Kate responded, "but please keep that to yourself for now. Please rely on Grace to take care of anything you need done, too."

"Kate, Acting General, it's been wonderful with you here," Wendy concluded, "good luck in everything!"

They hugged again.

Kate walked back into her old office. Elaine was there, helping her find everything that needed to be transported.

"Have you decided who will fill your post here yet?" Elaine asked.

"If you weren't coming with me and getting promoted in the process," Kate replied, "it would be you, Elaine. I'm thinking very much about naming CPT Nicole. You are aware of the positives as well as negatives she presents, but she is bright, imaginative, and ambitious, and our former issues are past us."

"You know that I'll tell you the truth," Elaine responded. "Nicole is always going to be a mixed bag, but I'm in agreement with you, as to her good points. When you call her in, you'll have to lay out the ground rules and make her understand that you have a strongly positive view of her but that ...
