... uninspired, banter at the expense of our shared professors.

"So, I kinda wanna go home with Davin. How mad would you be if I ditched you?" I asked Kristen, in the girl's bathroom.

Reflected above the one working sink, her expression said that she clearly did mind. "I thought we were gonna hang tonight."

"I know, I know. This is just a really good opportunity. I don't usually run into him," I said.

"One more hour," she said. "And, you have to make it up to me."

    "Dinner next time. I'll pay."

    "Where?"

    "Red Lobster?" I tried.

"Jackie's," Kristen countered. Not the nicest place in the area. But up there. Right at the edge of what I could afford if we both went entrées. She was going to make a good lawyer.

    "Fine. But no lobster."

"It's the king crab you should be watching out for."

    "Well not that either then."

"Deal. I don't like cracking the shells anyway. So what do you want me to do?"

I thought for a second. "Say you have to go back to campus. Rook will offer to walk you. Davin's house is the other way."

Kristen brightened. I think she liked the idea of walking around on campus with Rook. I'd have teased her if I didn't need her to do me a solid right now. She wasn't working under the same constraints, "Wait, you know where Davin lives?"

"That's not a weird thing to know!"

"Okay. Okay." Kristen held up her hands.

She went for the door, and I followed. But she didn't open it. Hand on the handle, she turned back to me. "Mel, I ...
    ... want one more thing."

    I braced myself. "What?"

"At Jackie's, I want to hearall about it." She put some emphasis on the 'all', it practically oozed out of her mouth.

"Will Luke be okay with that?" I asked.

"Luke watches too much porn. At worst, this is the same thing."

I shrugged, "Whatever dude. You know I'm not shy."

    -----

"So, are you seeing anyone?" I clasped my hands in front of me, looking innocently up at Davin. By this point, walking together in the direction of his place, under my flimsy pretense of meeting another friend downtown, we both knew it wasn't an innocent question. But it was good to keep up appearances. Though if he had a girlfriend I was about to be very miffed.

"I don't date during the season," he said.

"So what, you just put her on ice?"

"Well, I don't really date in the off season, either," he admitted.

I laced my hands behind my head and stretched my back. The chill air nipped at my hip bones as my shirt pulled up. "I'm not into the whole dating thing either. Sucks to be locked down." I caught him peeking when I opened my eyes, of course. He looked away, but he didn't seem embarrassed.

We stopped in front of Davin's place. Actually, I stopped first. Which was a mistake. I think he noticed. He gave me a longer, appraising, look. But I did my best to convince myself he was just checking me out again.

It was kind of a nice place, as undergrad housing went. A little one story house separated from the bigger places on ...
