... making points. If I had to guess, they were discussing strategy for the upcoming meet. Which I knew was this Saturday, thanks to all the digital stalking Heather and I had been doing.
"Do you have a crush or something?" Kristen asked. "You know he has a girlfriend, right?"
"He does?" I asked. The rush of disappointment brought my focus back to Kristen.
"Yeah, Aligasha. She'll fuck you up."
Kristen read my guilty grimace easily.
"Wait. You're hot for Davin? Really?" She shifted her chair so she could stare at the boys too. "I guess he is cute. In a grown up Disney channel kind of way. The new haircut is nice."
Of course, Davin picked that moment to look up. Kristen actually squeaked and flipped her back to him. But I kept enough composure to give him a finger waggly wave.
A few minutes later Davin and Rook were standing over us.
"Hey, Mel, been a while," Davin said.
"Yeah, it has. Sorry for creeping. Kristen was just saying how much she liked your new haircut."
"Actually, Mel said that," Kristen kicked me. She got me right in the shin, and I had to rest my elbow on the sticky table to stop from flopping sideways. "But it is nice," she offered, politely.

"Yes, please," I said before Krisen could ruin this for me. And soon the boys were pulling up chairs to our table, full drinks in front of everyone.
The conversation was awkward and slow to get going. I hadn't said more than a passing word to Davin since the one project we'd done together. And I wasn't positive Rook even knew my name.
He wasn't helping, either. He kept glancing around like he didn't want to be there, or was maybe afraid of being seen.
"What are you drinking?" Kristen asked him sweetly, she was really trying.
"Seltzer and lime. I don't drink in season."
"Oh, that's cool. My boyfriend doesn't drink either. But, not for a sport. He just doesn't," Kristen said.
As soon as Kristen mentioned her boyfriend, Rook relaxed. Suddenly, he was a totally different person and started engaging with Kristen. It seemed he was considering pre-law too. And they were chatting away in no time. Rook was playing wingman for Davin, I knew, pulling us into two separate conversations. But that was okay with me.
Davin wasn't particularly interesting to chat with. He wasn't a dullard or anything. Just rather predictable. With Kristen and Rook next to me, laughing at how fucking brutal their internships were going to be, I almost got jealous. But my eye was on the prize, and I kept trying with Davin until we settled into some workable, if ...
