... which devastated entire continents and in the last battle all the Bears were killed until only one survived, but despite being bitten a score times, seeping the venom from each of his hundred wounds he had enough strength to strike down Arachon and send the Spiderkin into the void."
"Is this their home?"
"A temple at least," said Katarinka, her hand pushing on the door.
"You are correct," a female voice said behind them and Aina whirled to see a semi-translucent woman, wearing old-fashioned robes and her hair done up in a style that the teen had seen on very old tapestries. The women moved forward and Aina automatically took station behind her Grandmom, who didn't appear concerned at seeing the ghost. "This was once a temple of the knights of Valourous, before the final battle and their vanishing from the Earth -- the cost of victory was high."
"It often is," said Katarinka in agreement and Aina was reminded her Grandmom had seen battle many times herself.
"It is now a haven for those who are opposed by evil, the Spiderkin may have gone but their taint will ever infect this world," the ghost said, "Rest here for the night and resume your journey on the morrow."
The door seemed to open of its own accord as the spectre faded from sight. Katarinka sheathed her sword and walked into the room, Aina immediately behind her. The room was tiled with marble, a dozen, evenly spaced, columns holding up the ceiling twenty feet above the floor. Rich, vibrant tapestries ...
... adorned the wall, with comfortable couches placed beneath them and glowing jewels, which cast a light which seemed natural though it wasn't, above. Two doors led off to rooms to the side and in the centre was a large bath, more a pool, which could easily fit a score of bathers and still have room for another half again; its water was clearest that Aina had ever seen, the blue bottom giving it the look of a tropical sea that a visiting merchant had once described to her. At the end was a table, with wine and sweetmeats and fruit on it, much better than the rabbit she'd eaten earlier, though she wasn't, as yet, hungry it was good to know it was there.
Her Grandmom was looking around, heading to the rooms. Aina quickly followed her and looked at them. They were virtually indistinguishable, both having a large comfy bed in the middle, with a couch and another small table with apples and pears in a dish and more wine.
After fleeing in the darkness and trudging through a cold forest during the day it looked even more luxurious. She was almost fearful her Grandmom wouldn't see it as she did and decided that staying in the temple and bathing in its waters wasn't how they were going to spend the night and they were going to spend it huddled around the dying embers of the fire upstairs (not that Aina would have been too displeased with the huddling). Luckily her Grandmom took the same view as the teen and said, "We'll stay here tonight, we could use the rest."
