... shivering Aina close, hugging her as she looked into the room and Aina blurted, "The statue, it moved."
"It seems you found an ancient passage," said Katarinka, letting the teen go. Aina unclasped herself, a little reluctantly and followed her Grandmom in. The statue hadn't come alive, as she feared, it had moved to one side as a door had swung open, with stairs down into the darkness.
The older woman slowly advanced closer to the door, Aina following close behind -- not because she wanted to be near the tunnel, which had who knew what lurking in it, but to be close to her Grandmom. "Be careful," she said fearfully, "Goddess knows where it leads..."
Katarinka was straightening and relaxing as she got closer. "I've felt the chill of evil sorcery before, this feels different -- good magics."
"Are you sure?" Aina stood beside her and automatically clasped the Amazon's arm. The muscles felt so firm, the skin so smooth.
"I'll check it out, you'd best wait here," Katarinka said.
The teen shook her head, "I'd feel safer with you."
"I don't think we have anything to worry about," her Grandmom gave a smile. After perhaps forty stairs she noticed it was less dark than it had been, her eyes getting used to it, she thought at first, except as she took a few more steps it began to get lighter.
Her Grandmom had noticed it too and was walking a bit faster, not enough that Aina couldn't easily keep up, but certainly not a creep forward in the dark. It was definitely getting lighter, and warmer as well, a pleasant heat like that of a summer's day. The steps which had been shrouded in blackness became visible, surprisingly they weren't cracked and decayed like Aina had expected but unchipped solid stone, with not even a cobweb spoiling their pristine surface. They continued to go deeper and deeper into the bowels of the temple.
The stairs ended in a corridor, fully lit though not a torch was to be seen. The corridor ended in a golden door above which there was a stone tablet with what looked like a heraldic insignia carved into it, a Bearman on a horse charging down what looked like a man with eight limbs, his body and head misshapen and evil-looking. Katarinka looked at it and said, "The Bears of Valourous."
"What?"
"It's an old legend, a thousand years ago the Warriors of Valourous, a knightly order, merged with the bears of the woods to give them the strength to defeat the Spiderkin of the demon, Arachon. According to myth it was a long and terrible war, ...
