"I know. I have a plan. We're going to break up tomorrow morning. You're going to have a fight with Callie about being available for me while I get over my break up. We'll continue to hang out and we can do whatever we want when we want." I stared at her in disbelief. It was almost genius in its simplicity.

"Why are you breaking up?" The reason needed to be bulletproof or Mom wouldn't quit.

"Children. He wants a bunch and I want to wait. Maybe I want kids and maybe I don't. I'm still young and I know kids are a lot of work. I want to have fun first."

"That ought to do it. She'll be disappointed because she wants grandkids, though."

"I know." That sigh was the first sign of regret she had shown. Our parents were looking forward to grandchildren. I wasn't certain that was going to be in the cards.

April found something to watch while we ate. She seemed caught up in it but I kept going over her plan in my head.

The only issue I had was with her ability to sell the breakup. I could always buy time, I lived on my own. April was still living in the house. She would have to be in character 24/7 for a few days to a couple of weeks.

"You don't think it will work, do you?" How the hell she read my mind, I'll never know.

"You need to play the part for more than a day, babe. One slip and she'll be all over it." I drained the last of my beer. "Then there's going to be questions we're not ready to answer."

... can do it. I'm highly motivated." She smiled at me over her wine glass. "Highly motivated."

"I don't doubt that. We're walking a tightrope until you graduate and get working. We could conceivably share a place and have it look legit then. Right now, it would just look weird.

"I guess you could try to pick a fight with her and move out, but that involves hurt feelings. I'd rather not deal with that if we don't have to."

"Yeah, that's true. I can convince her. If not, there's always Plan B." I wasn't sure I liked Plan A all that much. Plan B couldn't be any better.

"I just told you -"

"We come clean. I admit I'm a lesbian and you're covering for me." She gave me her innocent look and managed to say it with a straight face.

That did make me choke on a mouthful of pizza. "She'll die." Our parents weren't homophobic, they just really wanted grandkids.

"Paulie, I can do this. I swear. Once it's done, nobody will question what we do. Our mutual heartbreak obviously made us closer. Then we can get a place together and be happy."

"Kinda simplistic. We're having fun right now but we haven't tried being together under one roof without a buffer. That's why I wanted to go slow with the dating thing. We could go from one night to a weekend and then a little longer."

I knew when her eyes narrowed that we were about to have a major difference of opinion. "What?"
