... team who were so shiny and new I had never danced against them, but I had judged them.
In fact they had been knocked out of a competition earlier that year after making a mistake, and they were surprised when I told them I felt they could have taken second place in the Quickstep with a little coaching. Cam and Beth had won that one.
"Second place?" They stood, impossibly young with wide hopeful eyes. "But that would mean beating Frankie and Mia, and Robbie with Collette. They're all amazing, we could never beat them."
"You won't beat Frankie and Mia in Latin. Not until they get old and cronky," I admitted, making them laugh. "Same with Cam and Beth in a Waltz. Robbie and Collette are great all-rounders, but that Quickstep you had a little something going on there and I'm convinced you could have taken second place. Would you like me to tell you how?"
They did, of course, and I spent a productive twenty minutes conducting an impromptu coaching session and explaining the strengths they hadn't even realized they had, and how they could use that dance to start claiming medals and build from there.
Medals equal sponsorship on the circuit and the chance to develop more. I left them buzzing and excited, having sown some seeds in the up-coming generation.
I also had a dry throat and an empty glass, so I went hunting in the studio. Switching to sparkling water and grinning when the slim, sexy, mummy from the bounce house came bounding over to me, a little devil ...
... clinging to his back.
"Hey, have you seen Cam?" he asked, with a dazzling smile.
"Would I recognize Cam?" I asked, indicating the varied costumes around us.
"Yea, he's totally rocking 'Brendan Fraser in the first Mummy film' he looks amazing." Frankie sighed dreamily.
"You look pretty good yourself," I told him. Subtly enjoying the ripped costume and ripped abs under it. I mean, they were right there! "You didn't get that in a joke shop."
"Mia sorted us out, she loves doing costumes. Hey!" he frowned as the mini-devil made a sudden lurch to grab my cloak.
"You must be Danny," I said, steadying him. "Nice to meet you."
"How'd you know?" he asked, his eyes wide. Then sly. "Maybe I'm Josh?"
"You're Danny. And vampires can read minds so be careful," I flashed my fangs at him and he giggled.
In truth, it was as simple as I knew Danny was the confident one.
At that moment Frankie's eyes lit up and I turned, unsurprised to see Cam standing behind me.
"Hey," he said with a friendly nod.
"How are you Cam? All healed up?"
"Yea, I'm good."
I turned again when Danny tapped my shoulder, then surprised me by climbing into my arms. His face was serious now. "A bad man hurt Cam," he whispered in my ear.
"I know, I was there," I told him, giving him a reassuring squeeze. "It was scary, but the police were there too and they took care of it."
"Were you scared?" he asked, looking surprised.
"Of course, and I was upset and angry. But now Cam is fine ...
