... David. Most of Robbie's crowd are people from the circuit though, so you'll know lots of people and everyone's lovely."
She smiled, and I managed to smile back, my heart beat kicking up dangerously at the sound of David's name.
"It's a nice night so we're barbequing in the garden, drinks here or in the studio. There's a cloakroom here, and another loo in the studio. If you get really stuck you'll have to go exploring upstairs until you locate a bathroom. Oh!" She broke off when the doorbell rang.
"I'll be fine. Thanks Lucy, I'll see you later."
"Have fun."
I stepped into the garden, glancing quickly around at the mix of costumes, the busy grill with delicious scents, low music and groups of people all laughing and chatting happily.
I couldn't see David at the moment, so headed vaguely towards the studio. Smiling at a large bounce house at the far end of the garden. It was a bit out of place, being pink and covered in rainbows and prancing ponies. But the gang of kids and one taller mummy, all currently bouncing and shrieking with laughter, didn't seem to care.
I grinned as a tall, black, Harry Potter came over. "You made it then," he said and then frowned at me. "You know wizards can take vampires, right?"
"I'll be on my best behaviour," I promised and Robbie laughed.
"Yea right."
"I like Mandy's costume," I nodded at the grill where Robbie's wife was flipping burgers in jeans, T-shirt and an apron.
"She won't let anyone within three feet of ...
... the barbeque in costume."
"Probably sensible."
"Oh yea. She just tells people she's a ghost," he rolled his eyes. "Anyway, when you're hungry. There's all sorts over there with Mandy, but in the kitchen," he pointed at the house. "There's veggie/vegan options, just raid the fridge, use the microwave, everything's marked. And in the studio," he motioned over his shoulder. "Is the kosher stuff. Beef sausages and grilled chicken. Loads of bread and sauces etc, so just help yourself. We prepared all that this morning, so just blast it in the microwave and enjoy."
He grinned at my stunned face. "It's not all for you. I have some friends here who need to avoid dead pig as well. So leave some for them!"
I laughed. "Thanks, that's so kind. But I could have just gotten chicken from Mandy."
"That's been cooked alongside pork sausages?" he pulled a face. "My friends said the same, but it's no big deal. There's a small kitchen in the studio so we make use of it."
I gripped his arm. "It is a big deal. Thank you for going to the trouble."
He nodded. "I've lost track of David I'm afraid."
"It's okay. I'll wander until I bump into him accidently!" He smiled again but also looked a bit guilty. "It's all good, Robbie." I reassured him. "You made the right call."
"I'm glad it's over," he admitted quietly. "It's been hard on him." He looked up when someone called him. "Duty calls. Good luck, I'll see you later."
I moved on and got into a conversation with a dance ...
