... happened in the intervening twenty minutes.

Then I excused myself and went to greet Lea, who came nervously in, having finished giving a statement.

I greeted her the French way, before pulling her to a space I had arranged. "Come and sit with Patrick here, we saved you a space." Patrick stood as she approached and gave her a big hug, the whole table welcoming her.

"Oh, well. I wasn't sure," she stammered, as she sat.

"I asked the caterer's to bring you the soup when you arrived," I told her, as Patrick handed her some water. "Try and eat a little, I know you're shaken up."

"And we need to talk," Patrick told her. "Armenia thought we might do well together. We both need new partner's now." Patrick's long term partner had just retired.

Lea looked at us in shock and started to cry. I passed her the tissue packet that Kirsty had given to me.

    "I didn't know," she mumbled. "I promise, I didn't know."

"We know that," another dancer at the table told her. "You've only known Milo a matter of weeks before this competition started. We know that."

"It's okay," I told her, kneeling next to her. "You're among friends here. Don't let that man ruin this for you, you're very talented."

    "T-Thank you."

"Try and eat. Come find me if you need anything," I said and stood. Wincing as I collided with a solid body.

I turned and saw my friend, Clive. "Shit, I thought you were the soup!"

"That would be a mess," he grinned, then knelt next to Lea where I had just ...
... vacated, using my arm for support. "We were just concerned. Are you okay, Lea?" he asked in his beautiful Atlanta drawl.

    "Oh. Yes," she answered tearfully.

He squeezed her arm. "Okay, well a lot of us are meeting in the hotel bar later, so you come along. You grab us if you need anything. Or grab one of the girls, alright."

She managed to nod, and I pulled Clive up. Walking him back to his table. "Thanks for that."

"Not her fault," he said. "She's really good. It'll be a shame if she quits because of this. I mean he goes through partner's like hot dinners. Don't want to lose another one."

    "Still a gentleman," I teased.

    "Natural talent."

"Still straight?" I asked, my tongue in my cheek.

"Yes, although I know it brings you great sorrow," he deadpanned, and I chuckled as we split and I moved back to my own table.

Clive and I had been matched in the competition ten years ago and had been the first all-male team to win. It had been a blast and we were still good friends.

Amelia winked as I sat back down. "My first year judging the two of you won," she said, nodding towards Clive's table. "I still remember that perfect ten, Foxtrot."

I smiled. "Still one of my favorite dances," I admitted. "And the ten of course. I don't think Frankie and Cam are fully aware of just what they achieved with two perfect scores."

She nodded and poured some wine. "What about you and Kirsty? Favorite routine?"

Kirsty and I looked at each other, and said together. ...
