... see him again. He’s over a thousand miles away now.” He’s gone?! No. Why would he be gone? Did my dad find out about what really happened between us this whole time? Shit, my phone. Where is it? Did I delete all the messages between me and Clint? Did my dad read them? Oh crap. “Don’t call me that, dad. Why is he gone? What happened?” My dad seems to be momentarily confused by my questioning, his thick eyebrows knitting together in thought, as if I should already know the answers to my own questions. Then he seems to come to an understanding and pats my hand again; that is so annoying. “You have a concussion, Tink. They said you might have trouble remembering everything. Don’t worry though, you’re expected to make a full recovery in time. Just try to relax and enjoy not having to go to school, huh?” He gives me his version of a playful smile but all I see is his yellow stained teeth. Nasty. When I don’t respond to him, he takes a minute to think and then finally gives me the answers I’ve been desperately waiting for. “I went on a bit of a vacation…” he pauses, waiting to see if I follow him or remember. I nod my head; hurry up already. “You stayed here. He needs to hurry the hell up. “Before the accident he was staying nights with one of his lady friends and I suppose he never told you where he was or what was going on. After finding yourself pretty much abandoned by him you packed up and were going to stay at your friend’s house. But then…” I nod once more. So Clint totally took the blame for everything that happened. I bet my dad would be furious if he knew the truth; that it was my decision to leave Clint’s apartment that night. Why did he take the fall for it all? “And then you fired Clint?” I ask tentatively. “No. Good sakes, no. I should have though! But I wouldn’t be where I am today without his help in the company. Besides, it was my fault for trusting him with you in the first place. I’ve sent him to our Denver location. He will continue doing the same work and helping my firm succeed but he will never get close to you again.” “Dad… I’m fine.” “Fine?! He nearly killed you! Look, Tink. I know I haven’t been the greatest dad to you since your mother… but I want to start over and try harder, alright? Dads are supposed to protect their children and I handed you right over into the hand of danger. It won’t happen again. He’s gone from your life now and I’m here and things are going to be better, you’ll see.” I can’t think. I can’t take in everything that’s happened. My head is pounding horribly. “I’m super tired, dad. I’m going ...
