... lowest floor, where the customers seated outside where watching us closely. ”Do you think any of them remember what it used to look like?” asked Alice as I helped her put her coat on. ”I don't know. Possibly. Where do you want to go?” ”I'm not sure. You decide.” ”I'm not sure either. I'd like a cup of coffee.” ”So, should we just get coffee?” ”Are very you hungry?” ”No,” said Alice. ”Well, a bit. How about you?” ”I could eat. Raphaels?” ”No, I'm not in the mood for that. Let's go to that little French cafe.” ”Café Estelle?” Alice confirmed, that this was where she wanted to go and off we went. The cafe was a small corner business located a good walk away. We'd passed it not many days ago on such a walk. Alice seemed quite charmed by it, however, I thought it was rather tasteless. You know, pictures of black cats, arches and certain red mills. To top it off 'Madame Estelle', as she called herself despite being as French as the Alice, played the only harmonica record she owned repeatedly. We sat down by a small round table and the plump hostess came over. ”Bonsuuuuuuuuuuure, what can I get you two?” ”Two coffee's and... I'll have number ten,” said Alice. ”Five,” I said harshly. ”It won't be long! Mon amis!” said the hostess and waltzed away. I bit my lip slightly upon hearing last words, but refrained from comment. ”Don't be grumpy, Mr. Wakefield,” smiled Alice. ”Why did we have to go here?” ”So, you could teach her how to speak French,” teased Alice. ”Are you fluent?” ”That's ...
... a matter of opinion. I say no.” ”Can you fool a Frenchman?” I smiled. ”I can't. You never can. But when I was in Paris last, they did get rather confused.” ”Confused?” ”My family lives in the south. Provence.” ”Is that a large town?” It's not... It's not a town. They live in a city called Fréjus.” ”Why did this confuse them?” ”Well, I guess it's like if I spoke like I was from Cornwall, but I was really from America.” We dined out every day. None of the kitchens in the building was ready for use yet. In fact, I suspected the plumbing needed a check up too. When we had finished our food and 'Madame Estelle' shown us out, we separated. Alice returned home to watch the painters. They were sizing up the surfaces and covering what we had not yet covered. They would only be painting Alice's apartment today. I, on the other hand, was going to the bank and to Scotland Yard, where I would discuss a few things with Rockford. I'd then go to the library for I intended to do some research. I was particularly interested in maps of London as I'd like to get to know the city as well as possible. It had been a long day and I was getting ready to go home. It was already dark outside and I was glad I had gotten a warmer coat. I was walking down the street when I say a woman out of the corner of my eye and felt that I knew her. I turned, but she now stood with her back to me, talking to some guys. When she suddenly turned and faced me and sudden realization hit me. ”Macy?” it flew out of me. The ...
