I was nervously shaking as the Town Car stopped in front of the Figueroa hotel where I was going to meet my first client. I desperately wanted to tell the driver to take me back to my tiny Marina del Rey apartment. I desperately wanted my boyfriend to hold me as he begged me to give up my dreams and move back to our small town in Minnesota. I desperately wanted to be anywhere else than where I was at this very moment. Three months earlier I was graduating high school. Twenty-four hours after graduation my boyfriend and I hit the road and headed west. I was going to be a model. I wanted to be a professional model as long as I could remember. I would flip through fashion magazines and dream that one day I would be on those pages. Most parents wouldn’t encourage dreams of that magnitude, but mine did. For my sixteenth birthday my mom drove me down to Minneapolis to meet with a local modeling (talent) agency. After paying a few hundred dollars for modeling classes my career was born. Not only did I have a scholarship, but also I would be the first one in our family to actually go to college. My mom (and dad) didn’t want me to end up like my two older sisters, both married and pregnant right after high school. They wanted me to go to college so I could be successful. I was convinced that Maureen would help me find greater success without stepping foot in a classroom. After several discussions and a few arguments my parents finally relented. They agreed to let me put college on pause for a year to see if I could make my dreams come true. Not only did they give me their blessing they decided to invest in my future. To help they gave me a credit card to use in case of an emergency and $5,000 to get me started. There was only one person probably more excited about the move, and that was Jackson, my boyfriend. He was the perfect high school boyfriend. He was hot. He was sexy. He was dumb. When you’re sixteen you’re more pre-occupied with looks rather then intelligence. From the moment I met him during our junior year I couldn’t stop staring at his gorgeous body. I thought I loved him. I thought he was going to be my first and only ...
