... all the time with John.” “I only used to help out at his father’s garage,” my mother replied. “Who is John?” I asked again. My mother flipped the pages until I saw a very handsomely built young man. He was a tall, blonde-haired person and muscular as he worn a tank top with a riding suit tied at his waist. He was standing next to a dirt bike with a helmet in one hand and a trophy in his other hand. My mother hand touched the photo as she said, “That is John.” “Did he race dirt bikes?” I asked. My mother explained he raced anything, which had wheels on it. She explained they had been born just about on the same day in their neighborhood. Their parents were friends and they were friends as well. My Aunt said, “John and your mother did everything together growing up and she meant everything.” “Debbie,” my mother yelled. “What, it is true,” Debbie added as she flipped and pointed out photos of John and my mother together. The photos showed them together at a young age all the way through grade school and into High School. There were photos of John in a football uniform with my mother next to him in a cheer leading uniform. Debbie pointed to that one and said, “They were homecoming king and queen that year.” I had noticed that in some of the photos, John was looking at my mother or she was looking at him. Even at my age, I could see the love they held for each other. I asked my mother if they were boyfriend and girlfriend back then. My aunt gave a little laugh and replied, “They ...

There was one dated 1989 senior prom of my mother and John together. They were dressed fancy with him in a suit and my mother in a lovely dress. They stood under an archway and they each had crowns on their heads. Below it was not a photo but a yellowed old clipping from an old newspaper. It was from the front page and it read, “Two dead after drag race.” There was a photo of what looked like two cars. They were twisted together and burnt up to where one could only see the chrome rim wheels and no tires. The other photo was of John dressed in an Army uniform. He was standing holding his weapon next to some type of an army vehicle with fellow soldiers around him. The edges of the photo looked burnt as if it had been in a fire. I looked to Aunt Debbie and asked, “Why is my mother so upset?” Aunt Debbie sat down next to me and explained that by high school John and my mother were sweethearts. They were even elected king and queen of their senior prom as she pointed to the one photo. My aunt explained they were the perfect couple back then and everyone was jealous of them. The girls were jealous of your mother because she had John. The boys ...
