... to be at here, surrounded by old people. The only people close to my age were Jack and Greg - Katie’s nephew. And they were hanging out in the garage, playing video games while I was being hit on by some older guy. I sighed as he complimented my dress for the umpteenth time. He wasn’t even being subtle about his advances. “I have a, uh, boat. Maybe I can take you out sometime.” It didn’t matter to him that I was eighteen and he was, like, fifty. I sipped on my glass of wine as he droned on about the majestic sea or whatever. Then Jack came up to us. “Hey, why don’t you go flirt with someone more appropriately aged,” he said in a deep voice. My mouth gaped open at his words. There wasn’t even a hint of humor in his tone. I looked at the older man who shifted uncomfortably. I could tell he wanted to say something about Jack’s remark but the way my brother was looking at him, like he wanted any excuse to punch him in the face, left him silent. And he walked away without a word. When he left, Jack looked at me. He cocked his head to the side and pursed his lips. What was with him tonight? And why was he being so… I don’t know. Was he angry with me? “What are you doing with that guy?” “We were just talking.” “You’re just talking to a guy twice your age?” “In case you haven’t noticed, I’m by myself here. And I’m not having very much fun. So, excuse me if I want to have a fucking conversation!” I don’t know why I was talking to him like that. In truth, he’d saved me from a creep. ...
... It’s just that my attitude towards Jack had gotten sour. Being around him made me uncomfortable. My only defence was to make things between us a little less cordial. Maybe that would make things easier for me. “Fine, then let’s go.” “What?” “You’re not having fun so let’s go.” I was about to tell him no when my mom walked in. “What do you think you’re doing?” she asked in her reprimanding voice. “Olivia, you can’t drink!” “Why the hell not?” I shouted back. I knew she’d hate that. She hated anytime I was sassy to her in public. “If Jack can have a beer then I can have fucking glass of wine.” “Lower your voice, Olivia, Jesus!” she said, trying to maintain a steady voice. “And don’t argue with me.” That was the thing about my mom. She was always hard on me but never Jack. But I guess my step-dad was the same. He’d let me get away with just about anything but was stern with his son. I downed the rest of the wine and walked past Jack. “Let’s go,” I said as I left the room to get my coat. I heard Jack ask for the keys. My mom told him she and my step-dad would take a cab. I waited outside by the car. Jack came out. I watched him walk towards me with in his suit. I hadn’t let myself think about how good he looked that night. The suit was fitted, showing off his defined figure despite the fabric. I gulped as he came to the passenger side where I was. He opened the door for me. He even did the belt for me which was completely unnecessary. I wasn’t a little kid. His hand brushed my ...
