... enough to schedule a wake up call for 6 am, for our 10 am flight. We slept through the evening and night. The wake up call woke up everyone at 6. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time to fool around, just to run to the central post office to pick up the cash card for the new account and then run to the airport. We checked out of the hotel and caught a cab to the downtown post office. I had emailed my friend to send the card there when it came in. It was supposed to be in two days ago, and it was sent international express, so it should be at the post office today. After waiting in line for an hour, we got to the window. It took them another half hour (and 500 Hryvnias under the counter) to find the package. We went outside and I used the nearest payphone to activate the card. Olga’s eyes were big when I handed it to her. I told her that she could spend up to 5000 Hryvnias ($650) a month with it. That must have seemed like an unbelievable amount to her. The flight was leaving in two hours, so we rushed to the Boryspil airport. After the twins and I checked in – a lot of paperwork for them – we had to say our goodbyes to Olga and Irena. I whispered back, “Ya ...

They had been so busy crying and sobbing that they hadn’t been really looking around until now. Their eyes suddenly got big and they took a step closer to me as they noticed how big the place was. Tanya, who was standing next to me, grabbed my hand, and Sonya grabbed Tanya’s other hand. In a kind of parade we marched over to the gate. We took a seat near the window and watched the airplanes until they called for boarding. I led them down the ramp onto the plane. We found our row, they took the two inner seats and I took the aisle. When the plane took off, I wished I had a video camera. The two of them had a combination of delight, terror, and awe on their faces as they peered out the window at Kiev disappearing below. Somewhere over Germany they finally calmed down. When the stewardess asked them what they wanted for lunch, they were a little confused. I told them just to tell her what they want from the menu, so they did. It took a few minutes but I think I got the message through that the stewardess would bring the food to them, rather than going to get it themselves. That was a totally foreign concept to them. They sure enjoyed their chicken when it came though. They were fascinated with chicken that didn’t have bones in it. When we landed in Amsterdam to transfer planes, the airport there was many times the size of the Kiev airport. I had to nudge them along to the ...
