... were out of the Kiev and big city orphanages. She then started hinting, they had no money; the government had missed the last two years of funding for the place. Because they were a supposedly government agency, they still had electricity and heat, but all the food was leftovers donated by local schools and the military base a few miles away. I laid 2000 Hryvnias on the desk and said, “Does this help?” Apparently it did, because the director’s eyes got very big and the money disappeared in an eyeblink. She and Olga started discussing the details. Apparently there was one hangup, Olga was unable to adopt, her income was too low. However, surprisingly, I could. As I demonstrated the ability to support the k**s, and I was engaged. The issue there is that I would have to take them with me when I left in five days, and the paperwork might not go through that fast. I just looked at the director, rubbed my fingers together and said, “Skolka?” (How much?) Well, we needed bribes for everyone up the line. She would personally go to Kiev and process the paperwork (and pay the bribes) at the main agency. That part would get done on time. However, I needed to go to the U.S. Embassy in Kiev and get the paperwork for the twins done before they could enter the United States. On Thursday, three days from now, the local paperwork should be done, and I could go to Kiev and take care of the U.S. paperwork. After another hour of jabbering between Olga and the director, we left. Irena and the twins were still sitting in the courtyard talking. I turned to Olga and asked, “Should we tell them?” She grinned and nodded. We went over to the girls, holding hands. Irena looked up as we approached. She sadly turned to Tanya and Sonya and said goodbye, got up and came over. Olga, said as she approached, “Aren’t Tanya and Sonya coming too? After all, they are your s****rs.” Irena stopped in confusion for a moment, then squealed, “Really?” When Olga nodded, she gave first Olga a big hug then turned to me and gave me one. She turned and ran over to the twins, taking a skip or two while she ran, nearly tripping over her own feet. Irena rapidly spoke to Tanya and Sonya, waving her hands in the air and jumping up and down. Sudden both Tanya and Sonya shrieked simultaneously. The three girls started jumping up and down together as they all group hugged. The three of them came running over to Olga and me. One of the twins (I still couldn’t tell them apart) rapidly asked, “Is it true? We can go with you?” I nodded and said, “Da”. The two of them shrieked again, gave Olga and me big hugs. Olga told them to go get their things and they ran inside the building. They were back in ...
