... period. He became so enamored with his past that over the years he has transformed five acres of his farm into a historically-accurate, working replica of that village. He founded a group of volunteers who enjoy live action role-playing. They take the parts of the various village inhabitants and usually do the reenactments on two weekends every month. Some of them also use their vacations to participate in week-long Renaissance Faires. Trent defrays part of the cost of building and operating the village by taking entrance fees and donations from the many visitors who come to enjoy the educational, old world atmosphere. Many of the visitors also dress in period costumes and act their parts. The participants in his group spend a lot of time on research and spend their own money to create costumes from the period. Trent has told me that the participants take their roles very seriously. They fully immerse themselves in their parts and try to take on the personas of their characters. They challenge one another to stay in character for their entire time in the village, and many of them lose themselves in their roles. He invited us to join the group and said that if we agreed, I would be playing the part of the blacksmith’s assistant, called a striker, and Lynn would be a married wench in the inn. Lynn is a very shy and quiet person, and she knew enough about the life of wenches from her studies in college that she wasn’t very happy with that role. She explained to Trent, “I’m afraid that I won’t make a very good wench at your inn. As you certainly know, wenches were usually young, single, lewd, and buxom women who worked as waitresses or servants, or just hung out in the taverns and inns to attract and entertain the men. Many of them were even prostitutes who gave sexual favors to the inn keeper’s patrons. For goodness sakes, Trent, I’m a forty-two year old, married woman and mother. My personality is not outgoing enough to parade around like a strumpet and enjoy or do justice to that role.” Trent laughed out loud and responded, “Wow, Lynn, you do know your medieval history. However, ...
