... survivors. I watched Kyle as the girls and Kelly talked. He listened, but I could tell that this was all familiar ground to him. His eyes drifted closed now and then. I kept an eye on Kelly and saw that she was aware of him fading in and out, but said nothing. “If there are other survivors close to us,” Celeste said, “they should be communicating via shortwave.” “And you being here gives me hope that there could be!” Faith said, reaching over to place her hand on my bare arm. I did my best to smile at her. She leaned back and returned my forced smile with a genuine one. “Yes,” Celeste said. “And even if they aren't close, with enough power, we could talk to people all over the world!” “What’s it going to take?” I asked. “What do you need to build your radio?” We talked for a long time and nibbled on the fruit and nuts. The tea was wonderful and lightly sweet. Eventually, Kelly and the older girls served the soup. Bethany and Amanda went outside to harvest some greens and we had a salad with the beef and vegetable soup. It was the first meal that I had eaten in the company of other people in over a decade. The thought made me feel strange. The knowledge that I had to return to my empty home in just a little while made me feel lonelier than I had in a long time. “Are you okay, Bruce?” Kelly asked. “Oh, yes,” I said. “I was just thinking.” “About what?” little Amanda asked. Can we use your truck?” Her excitement was contagious and before long I was in problem-solving mode. I didn’t know much about radio and electronics, but I knew that I could disassemble and reassemble an antenna. I also knew that we could figure out how to find just about anything that she needed and make it work. “We could build a radio for you too,” Bethany said. “That way we could stay in touch.” “Yeah!” Amanda said. “You could come and see us whenever you wanted.” “Well, if you ever want to visit me,” I said, “you’re more than welcome.” “Could we do that daddy?” Amanda asked. “Sure,” he said tiredly. “That would be great.” “What kinds of animals do you have?” Faith asked. I told them about the farm and the horses. I drew a map to my farm and another one that showed how the compound was arranged. I warned them about all of the dogs. “It would take us forever to get there,” Kelly said. “We don’t have a car.” “Why not?” I asked. “The gasoline is all contaminated with water,” Kyle said. “And there’s no electricity to pump it.” “I have a tanker truck parked at my farm,” I said. “I siphon out the gas that I need and ...
