Enchanter By blackrandl1958 The situation was rapidly becoming impossible. I didn’t know how long I could keep this up. Something nasty sizzled down the hall followed by two more bullets. They were shooting at the wall behind me, hoping the slugs would bounce off the bricks and hit me. I’d have already been dead if I didn’t have a shield up. Everything I stopped, nasty spell or bullet left me that much weaker. I was going to have to do something; I didn’t know what. The window down the hall looked likely but it was a four-story drop to a concrete sidewalk. I sent a feeler down the hall. There were four of them and at least one was a better sorcerer than I was. They all had guns, but so did I. I was carrying a 12 gauge with a two-inch barrel under my long coat and I had gotten one of them. I was hoping for the cops to show up. A twelve gauge is a hell of a loud weapon and when he stepped out from the alley and tried to fry me, I was just a little quicker. Someone must have reported the racket by now but it didn’t seem likely that the police were going to get there in time to keep me alive. I could charge the guns or break a leg jumping out the window. Charging was my inclination but fortunately, my brain vetoed that idea. I couldn’t just crouch there. It was going to be the window. I eased the shotgun around the corner and it let out a bellow. That would keep them in place for a while. There was a patch of grass between the sidewalk and the street but it was going to take ...
... quite a leap to get there. I went crashing through the glass and there was that sickening plunge. I tried to get off a levitation spell just as I hit and it worked a little. I only broke one ankle. It hurt like hell, but I couldn’t lay there and moan like I wanted to. I got up and made my way down the sidewalk as best I could. I could make a loping run and I got out of there. I caught a cab three blocks away. By the time I got home, the ankle was throbbing and swelling quite a bit. I paid the cab driver and limped toward the house. I made it about half way and the ground rose up and hit me. I couldn’t understand why I was lying there. I needed to get up, but the sidewalk was too soft. Someone was calling me. “Oliver, are you ok? Jesus you’re bleeding.” That was a surprise to me. “Can you set up? I’m going to call an ambulance.” I squinted up into the sun. There was a girl bending over me. It was Fallon. Fallon Blake is my next-door neighbor. She’s been my best friend since we were in the sixth grade. “No, Fallon; don’t call anyone,” I managed to croak. “Just help me in the house.” She pulled me into a sitting position and supported me while I got my good leg under me. She pulled and I pushed and I managed to stand up. “My leg is broken,” I told her. “Let me lean on you.” “Oliver, have you been in an accident? Are you drunk? Is that why you don’t want me to call anyone?” “None of that,” I told her. “Just get me inside.” She got me as far as the sofa and I collapsed on it. “Where ...
