When she saw Evan she became very agitated, “That son-of-a-bitch should have just killed me. I’m no longer a woman, I can’t give you more children. I would be better of dead.” Evan was some what confused and very upset. He rushed to the bed and put his arms around Maylea. “NO, NO, my love, you are my life. I would be nothing without you. You are still a woman, my woman and we have a daughter that will need us both.” Just then the nurse entered the room with the baby. “Feeding time if you feel up to it Mrs. McNevin” the nurse said as she stepped up to the bed and pulled the blanked back from the babies face. Even through her tears and anger Maylea had to smile and Evan smiled with her as they looked at the most beautiful face they had ever seen. Maylea took the little bundle and held it to her breast and felt the joy that run through her body as the hungry little mouth sought out Maylea’s waiting nipple and began to suck the warm milk from her mother. The doctor told them she and the nurse would leave them alone and give them some quite time together. If this was going to be their only child she would be a very special one. When Kamea had finished nursing Evan took her in his arms. He gently held her up and ever so softly kissed her on the lips. Then he took Mayles’s nipple in his mouth and sucked a small amount of milk into his mouth. Then he stuck his finger in his mouth and wet it with the milk and gently wiped it across Kamea’s lips. He returned his finger to his mouth, wet it again and put it up to Maylea’s mouth. She sucked it in and swallowed, then Evan did the same. “We will share everything with this beautiful child from this time on” Evan said as he leaned down and kissed his loving wife . George and Cora, the other couple whose child was born the same evening as Kamea, came by the next day. George told them they had their baby boy examined by two specialist and they had determined that their baby had brain damage and were willing to write statements that, in their opinion the damage was caused by the misuse of forceps on the infant’s head during delivery.
