... can chat here, unlike on the train.' I turned toward her a little in my seat. I could feel my own face reddening too. I was just about to say something deeply profound to help put her at her ease when my phone started ringing. I made my apologies and answered it. It was my wife saying that the girls had a party to go to that we'd both forgotten about, and that I needed to get them home asap. I turned to Helen, my train temptress. 'I'm sorry, I have to go. Will you be on the train on Monday?' She nodded. 'Then I'll see you then.' I gathered the kids together, making sure we had all the sunglasses and hats that we'd arrived with, and began the walk home. I know it was wrong, and I'm not proud of the feelings I was having, with a loving wife and family, but I couldn't wait until Monday morning when I would see Helen again. The rest of the weekend passed by without incident and when the alarm sounded on Monday, I almost bounded out of bed and into the shower. I felt a twinge of guilt as I put the phone down, but that soon dissipated as I grabbed my coat. I'd got a text message earlier on arranging to meet Helen at a pub not far from our homeward train station. I arrived at the place, it was a small old style pub which I'd been to a couple of times before. I ordered a pint and sat at a small table in the corner near the ladies' toilet and waited. I was half way through my beer when she walked in, looking a little flustered. 'Sorry I'm late. Trouble on the tube.' I ordered her a large glass of wine and she sat down opposite me. We chatted so easily, like we'd known each other for years. We talked about our day, the ups and downs of office politics, what was happening in the news that day. We had another drink, then another. As I set the latest round of drinks on the table I sensed a change in the atmosphere, there was a certain electricity. She looked into my eyes as I sat ...
