... who was in her second year as principal, was sitting at her desk staring at Ned on the other side of the glass. She had pieced most of the story together and her first thought, was "well I'm out of a job."

Between her teacher's incompetence and what would no doubt be a pair of furious parents demanding her head on a platter, she figured she was indeed toast.

But now, she was seeing a sliver of hope.

When she found out that Ned's mother was out of the country and that his father was away on business, she called Ned's step-sister to the office.

She seemed positively giddy about the days events. She told Ms. Jackson that as far as she knew Ned's mother was gone for weeks at a time and Ned has a babysitter at the moment because "he doesn't like staying at our house."

Becky gave the impression that neither one of Ned's parents could be bothered to get too worked up about all this.

"Do you think we could call your mom to come get Ned? Maybe he could stay at your place at least for the weekend?"

Becky's eyes lit up at the suggestion and she volunteered to call her mom.

The side of the call Ms. Jackson could hear was full of phrases like "funniest thing ever, I laughed so hard, you can't believe how small it is, no clothes, just a towel..." and on and on it went with intermittent laughter.

When she got off, she said "Mom's on the way."

When she told Ned that his stepmother was on the way, he was not pleased. He told the principal that he'd rather just go ...

"Well you can't go home like that can you? You'll be better off having family to take care of you."

"She never has before," muttered Ned.

This statement was born out when Ned's stepmother, Claire, arrived without any clothes for him.

Principal Jackson saw Claire's arrival through her glass window and took a deep breath.

This was her one shot.

When this practically naked boy had first been ushered into her office, it quickly became apparent the McNally clan was knee deep in whatever was going on here. Her first thought was "fire Moon and expel his sisters", but as they spun their ridiculous stories about how they were only trying to help and that Ned was an exhibitionist who kept streaking and exposing himself, she started to see a possible way out and realized that in fact, she needed the McNally's on her side.

And now, as she watched Claire look at her towel clad stepson more with amusement than sympathy, her confidence grew. She started by apologizing. "I wish he'd come to me sooner, I'm sorry for your families embarrassment," etc.

And then she started to steer things in a different direction. "It's odd that he didn't get help from a teacher, in fact, he seemed to avoid them. It was even odder that he had a towel sometimes and other times he didn't," suggesting perhaps that Ned was the one in charge here.

The fact that at one point his hands had been tied behind his back was simply ignored.
