... it was Patty's turn.

"We were going to take him back to the boys gym, but he'd be so embarrassed walking in like this, (and here Ned without even realizing he was doing it shook his head up and down in agreement) so we were going to take him to the prop room in the auditorium, where they keep all the costumes. They did Grease last year, we're hoping to find him a t-shirt and a pair of jeans."

"But there is a class is in there," Mr Williams almost shouted, with just a hint of panic in his voice, "like I don't know, maybe 200 kids!"

"Yes," said Patty patiently as if to calm him down. "That's why we will take him around the back and enter through the back door. The prop room is back there. No one else will see us."

"Right, yes, um good," said Mr. Williams as he raked his fingers through his hair.

Another minute or two and this would no longer be his problem.

"Okay, yes, get going."

As they walked towards the Auditorium, both girls let out long sighs of relief. They had not failed. Their brother would be so happy!

Feeling a bit euphoric, Patty turned her attention to Ned.

"So how's your day going so far, are you having fun?"

Ned just stared up at her.

She threw her head back and laughed. "Well I'm having fun! How about you Shannon, are you having fun?"

Shannon let out a little chuckle, "so much fun."

True to their word, they walked around to the back of the auditorium. "Maybe, thought Ned, maybe fun time is really over." It turned out ...

... that the back door was really a side door that was propped open with a little rock. Patty opened the door, tossed aside the rock and Ned was ushered inside.

It was a bit unnerving as Ned was immediately hit with the sound of laughter. He was so accustomed to laughter being directed at him now, that he flinched a bit. But no, he was just hearing the audience reacting to something the speaker on stage was saying.

He couldn't see any of this just as they couldn't see him. Still, his level of vulnerability kicked up a notch.

He relaxed a little when Shannon said, "let's go find you those clothes."

They walked through some black curtains and Ned stopped short. He caught his first glimpse of the audience. There were indeed a large number of students sitting there.

Fortunately, he was hidden in shadow, but still, red alert!

"Oh no," Patty said, "it looks like we entered on the wrong side! Oh well. Why don't you just run over there and get what you need."

Ned could indeed see a room across the way and he could see racks and racks of clothes. He ached for them.

"We can go back out and around to the other side door." Ned suggested.

"Hmm," said Shannon, "we could, but we closed it behind us and it's alarmed now. If we push it open now it will set off the alarm."

Ned shuddered at the thought of the whole school filing outside, himself included.
