... Hereditary before Melanie made them turn it off and watch The Nightmare Before Christmas instead. They spent another evening decorating cookies and another at the county fair, Sophia sitting out on several of the more intense rides that Hayley and Melanie loved so much. When Melanie wasn't with them, Sophia and Hayley spent much of their time just talking, catching each other up on all the drama in their lives. Sometimes they would thrift, sometimes they would watch Lego Masters, but usually they just lay on the couch together and talked for hours. Strangely, Hayley found herself becoming less social at school, the constant validation of everyone around her more of a nuisance now than it had ever been before. Unfortunately for Hayley, the less interested she acted in everybody else, the more interested they were in her. Hayley didn't mind the girls so much, as they seemed to understand when she was tired of a conversation, but the boys were frustratingly insatiable. They would speak to her endlessly about things she couldn't possibly care less about, never seeming to interpret her disinterest as anything but a challenge to overcome, only stopping when class began or somebody else showed up to steal her away. He was smart, which made their conversations surprisingly captivating on occasion, but what she appreciated most was that he could take a hint. As much as she liked him, even he could get tiring. But when he did, and she lost interest in the conversation, Damien was quick to wrap it up and leave Hayley to enjoy her solitude in peace. In all honesty, she appreciated most when he stayed silently by her side, acting as a deterrent, but she would never admit that to him, fearful he may misinterpret such a request. He even met Sophia once, receiving her stamp of approval as he was quick to leave once the girls began their conversation. The strangest change in Hayley's life, however, were the moments she spent alone. Charlotte, Sophia, Melanie, Mia, track, music, television - these were all welcome inclusions in Hayley's life. But, not infrequently, Hayley would find herself lying alone in her room with nothing but her thoughts to keep her company. She thought of the events of the ...
