... American.
They all had big, confident, but pleasant smiles on their faces as they walked in.
I heard Tamika shriek, making me turn toward her. She had a look of surprise and excitement on her face, which made me instinctively follow her line of sight to the large, older white man.
"Mayor Morris!" She said, shouting in excitement again, "OMG, I can't believe it!"
Her statement made the reason the man had looked so familiar suddenly fall into place. He was the mayor! Mr. Morris is Jim Morris's dad. I had seen his face on TV, billboards, etc. His face was one of those that your brain was familiar with, but just kind of relegated to the background of your subconscious.
Her reaction caused the whole room to breakout into hearty, pleasant laughter—well, almost the whole room. I was frozen, not knowing how to react.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, sir. OMG! I can't believe this!" She said she was hurrying forward toward him excitedly.
"The pleasure is all mine, young lady. I have heard lots of good things about you, and I must say things sure do look promising," he said, taking her hand and holding it in his big paws.

My eyes went from the huge grins on the faces of Jim and Rick to the full smile on Darrell's. The contrast between his shining ebony skin and his perfectly set, bright white teeth as he smiled was attention-grabbing.
"OMG! No! I have never met. Good to meet you, sir," she said excitedly again, turning toward him and putting her hand in his outstretched one. "I can believe it! Mrs. S, you definitely got the hookup," she giggled excitedly.
I watched as they all laughed again, their faces all displaying their satisfaction with her response, and I knew I was way out of my depth and away from what was familial.
"Pleasure to meet you too, darling," he smiled down at her, his eyes, like the mayors, also drinking her in.
"Look at me here, getting distracted by all this goodness and being a bad host! What will you gentlemen be having?" Mrs. Shaw asked.
The two older men requested Bourbon on the rocks, while Jim and Rick went with Brandy.
I felt incredibly awkward, as in all these moments and interactions, no one acknowledged or said anything to me.
We all still stood around the bar, Tamika between the Mayor and Darell, with me a little somewhat separated from the rest of the group as they charted and bantered, waiting as Mrs. Shaw fixed the drinks. She also ...
