Maggie found her voice.
The first snowstorm of the season was a bad one. Clark and his oldest daughter, Maggie, had just finished touring the college she would be attending in the fall and were headed back to Montana when they were caught in the storm. As they drove through the blizzard, the windshield wipers struggled to keep up, and the snow piled up to the point that it was difficult to discern the road from the wilderness.
Maggie had turned eighteen over the summer and was planning her freshman year at college. She was going to be going to her father's alma mater. It was only a couple of hours away. If her mother had known she only put in one application, 'pissed' wouldn't be a word strong enough to describe her demeanor.
Clark was doing his best to stay on the road however his luck ran out. The car careened off the road and into a ravine. The powder snow piled over the top and buried the fancy SUV. It was dark inside the car save for the interior lights that Clark had put on. He attempted to get out to assess the damage, but the weight of the snow prevented the doors from opening. Maggie's heart sank as she realized that they were stranded in the middle of nowhere. Clark, however, remained calm and began to search the car for anything they could use to survive.
He immediately retrieved the emergency kit under the third-row seat, grabbing the crank-operated light and the fancy new sleeping bag made of a special fabric that was guaranteed to not rip, tear, or ...

A few quick calls to his wife and to emergency services reassured Clark and Maggie that help was on the way, and they would be back home, safe and warm, in no time. The battery in the car must have taken some damage after the descent because the interior light began to dim within the first hour. They took turns cranking the light every fifteen minutes to keep from plunging into darkness.
Eventually, they huddled together for warmth, Clark sharing stories about his favorite memories from his time at college. Maggie shared how much she enjoyed the beautiful campus and how great it would be to live in the dorms along with the other students. She also confided in her father that she hadn't applied anywhere else. Given the circumstances, he was much more forgiving than she expected.
The hours dragged on as they sat in the cold, waiting for rescue. They tried turning off one of their phones at a time to conserve battery life, but eventually both phones were dead.
Maggie fell asleep at some point, but Clark stayed awake, listening for evidence of help arriving. Every time he thought he heard a vehicle approach, he felt a surge of hope, only to be disappointed when nothing came of it. No longer able to tell what time it was, or even what day it was, Clark knew that they were in grave danger, but he refused to give up hope. He held ...
