... theme song for a new Netflix show (something Priya had facilitated through her network), Nadine's career had taken off with appearances at Glastonbury and on Later. She had a full summer of UK festival appearances lined up. Then, they were off on tour across the US in the autumn, then Europe the following spring, and were moving all their stuff into their parents' attics. Jenny and Tom were heading for teaching posts in Argentina after the summer term, wanting to travel a bit and experience something new before starting a family. Tom had moved into the shared house shortly after I did, and we'd grown close. Well, we all had. I was going to miss them all. And so obviously there was no question of Priya and I staying on in that house by ourselves. We were getting our own place, one we were buying, down in Cliftonwood. I was going to really miss that shared house off Cotham Hill, but it was time. All of our dreams were coming true and yet the passage of time always left traces of sadness for what had been left behind.
"Yeah, it is. Still, it's been fucking awesome. And I'll be back for Christmas clogging up your spare room before you know it."
I spotted the clock on the wall opposite and frowned.
"Is that time right?"
She checked her phone. "Yeah it is. Fuck, they're running late."

"It's fine, it's fine," she said in a rush, "the car got blocked in. They are on their way."
"Oh thank goodness!" I heaved a sigh of relief, and felt my heart rate descending. "I'd better go tell Tom. He's probably on edge."
"I'll wait here for them. Good luck!"
I pushed through the doors of the wedding venue, already full, the crowd murmuring quietly over Nadine's piano playing. I gave her a big smile as she looked my way. I strode down the aisle, trying to project confidence, to reassure everyone that all was under control. Tom was standing at the end, jiggling up and down on the balls of his feet, trying to keep his nerves under control.
"Don't worry," I said as confidently as I could, "Jenny's on her way: the wedding car just got blocked in. They'll be here shortly."
"Oh, phew, for a moment there..."
I cut him off. "Never! Believe it Tom. I know what it is to see a girl look at you with nothing but love and adoration in her eyes, and I've never seen Jenny look at you with anything but. She's yours, heart and soul."
He wrapped me in a hug. "Thanks Kate," he choked out. I could tell he was close to tears.
"None of that!" I joked, trying to lighten the mood, "if you wanted to cop ...
