... stayed at his folks' house, talking to them about the disaster his family had become. The kids were playing in the den. His mother was in favor of trying for a reconciliation. His dad only gave a rueful smile when she said that.
The kids ate dinner at six, meatloaf and spinach. Then he hustled them into the car. He had told them that their mom was tired because she stayed out all night, so she didn't come to get them.
He stopped at an ice cream store before he went home. The spinach hadn't gone over well. They ate bowls of ice cream, then went back to the house. It was eight pm, their bedtime.
Linda came out when she saw the car. The kids ran to her, and they all hugged. They excitedly told her about their time at the Grands' house.
Jim watched. Linda was a little stiff with them, but he felt that the children didn't notice. He allowed Linda to put them to bed. At nine, she came down to the kitchen, where Jim was drinking some seltzer.
She sat at the table and asked, "Is there some way we can try to seem normal until we get back somewhere toward normal?"
Jim had thought about that. He said, "I have an appointment with a child therapist tomorrow morning. After that we can talk."

"You can't really mean that. We've been married ten years. Ten years versus one night. Just let some time pass. I love you and you love me."
"Not so. You ripped that out of me. Nothing of that left. When I look at you, I see you getting fucked by the jerk. I see you choosing him over me. You can go to hell." Jim got up and went down to his basement abode. Linda heard the dead bolt.
Jim's appointment with Dr. Heidi Hawthorne was a lengthy one. She asked for and got a huge amount of detail about what happened at the club, what the marriage had been like, and what had happened since Linda came home. She was taking notes, but there was also video. Part of the long interview was taken up by Jim's tears, which flowed copiously as he described his marriage, and the betrayal. He did not cry when he described the arrangements he'd made after he got home.
When the history was complete, they talked it through from the point of view of the kids. The upshot was that separate lives within the marriage, if accompanied by distaste for each other or open dislike, would damage the children more than a divorce. Even if Jim reached the point of true indifference to Linda, and she to him, the lack of warmth might have ...
