... met her, and where they got married. He proposed to her on Christmas Day, fifty years ago. He's lonely and scared not to have her with him this Christmas. They had planned to do this trip, this year, so there won't be a family reunion. My brothers and sisters will be visiting their in-laws."
"That's all right, Mathieu," Karl tells him. "I understand. It means a lot to him, and it's going to be difficult for him, you know."
Karl takes Mat into his arms, hugs him, and then kisses him.
"Have a good night, little guy. Say hello to your dad for me."
Both look like snowmen. The snow has substantially increased in intensity. They can hardly see three feet ahead of them. Karl turns around and walks home. Mat looks at him as he disappears into the snow wall. He turns the other way and unhurriedly walks home.
"Hey, Son!" His father says. It's too much to say that he's happy, but Mat's presence helps a lot. "How was your supper?"
"It was great," Mat says, trying to get all the show off of him. "We had lots of fun. The food was beyond good. I'll have a shower and coffee after that. Got to have my coffee."

He's been running around with Steve, trying to get everything ready for the winter. We surprisingly got our construction permits for two big projects. It's been crazy." Mat takes a sip of coffee.
His dad goes to the kitchen, returns with the coffee pot, and refreshes their mugs.
"Tonight," Mat continues, "after the restaurant, he asked me to come to his place with him. It's the first chance we've had to spend a little bit of time together. But I told him I couldn't go. I didn't want you to be alone your first night here."
His dad looks at his son, proud of his empathy and maturity at such a young age. He adores him. He's the baby of the family, and everyone took care of him when he was born, in one way or another, and they all want his ...
