... She became aware of a tremendous crushing pressure all about her. As she stumbled down the rapidly emptying corridor, she felt like she was suffocating, suffocating from the secrecy with which she'd had to cloak the most significant events in her life from nearly everybody. She thought she might scream. But ironically, when Mr. Lester had pierced that cloak with his comment about how she'd 'made it' the pressure had suddenly seemed to increase ten-fold. Nothing had really changed but somehow, she felt as though the world was pregnant with a promise of great change and it was oh so close. She could finally imagine a life after thisweight was cast off. But as she began to believe the time might be here, it suddenly seemed that she was swimming through quicksand. All the pressure she'd had to ignore in order to endure was now becoming insufferable. She ached to be rid of its weight on her spirit.

She literally stumbled into the Nurse's office. Nurse Lester looked up smiling and quickly grew concerned. "My god child, what is wrong?"

"Please Ms. Lester, I can't stand this anymore. Nothing's right. I feel like I can't breathe, like I'm trapped in a dead skin and I have to shed it off of me or I'll die. Please tell me tomorrow isn't going to be like yesterday! I can't stand this dead sameness anymore." And Claire burst into racking sobs.

... remarkable feats and who was suffering so deeply from the loss of her Master. For Kay knew at its heart this is what so troubled Claire. Yes, she'd maintained a semblance of normalcy, but from her own experience, Kay knew how bleak a world it was when a submissive, once sheltered in the heart of a loving Dominate, was ripped from that all-encompassing security and guidance; was forced to make her way alone in the world. It was a wound felt more deeply than any other kind of lost love.

And for Claire, who'd been claimed so young, who'd had so little experience with independence, and who had such fierce needs driving her, the loss of her Ted must have been devastating. And yet she'd managed, had not succumbed to any deeply self-destructive behaviors, had kept up her grades and had navigated her way to young adulthood largely unscathed. But she was on the ragged edge and there was simply no way the small, shrinking pond of high school was going to meet her needs, could even offer hope that someday they <i>would</i> be met. It was time. "Hush Claire. Tomorrow is going to be very different than today. Trust me. The world is bigger than high school. You're legally an adult, but you're trapped in a world of children and you haven't been a child for a very long time. It's time you began to choose your place in the adult world without fear of revealing your true nature.
