    ... too."

"Coralline had a muse?" Theo asked.

Keith absentmindedly nodded, his wisp-inhabited earring dangling with the glint of a pre-noon sun. His smooth hair stuck out under a white beanie that matched his plush vest.

"Narkissa," the Asian shaman said. "Muse of gentle slumber and unconscious relaxation, if I recall. Cor wanted to do something with kids or pets. So I guess the animal shelter suits her."

Sacred appeared next to them. His superhuman ability as a ranger-type Redeemer let him move through the forest off the beaten path like he was on flat ground. "How'd they break up?"

Keith grinned, then sighed. "There was a girl among the lady shamans, Kaitlin. She thought it was a great idea to show magic to all her girlfriends from the country club."

"What a bitch," Sacred said, perhaps just to swear.

"Okay, I don't actually know if there was a country club involved but she was the type. So poor Cor got roped in and tagged along. And guess what, the girls freaked. So the Shrouded showed up and hit the Baseliners with amnesia."

"Shrouded?" Sacred asked. "Five white tunics or veils, blowing in the wind? And sometimes wind makes the fabric flutter so it's clear there's not even an invisible person. There's just cloth."

"You had a run in?" Keith asked. "Colors and numbers vary, but otherwise that was spot on."

Sacred jumped onto a tree root that had dug through the dirt path, balancing perfectly stable on one heel. "Saw them twice, taking care of a ...
... demonic mess we'd stumbled upon. Left the Baseliners frazzled for a day or two but didn't seem too bad."

Keith shrugged. "I guess you champion of the Pactmaker get special treatment. Anyway, Baseliners just have a bad few days, although it can worsen some mental illnesses or trigger a nasty episode. The offending Knowing, however... a few hours of psychosis, then vomiting, fever, some more flashes of psychosis. Everyone who's gone through it said it was the worst thing ever."

    "Pretty harsh," Theo said.

Keith scoffed. "Until last decade we didn't even call them the Shrouded. People talked *around* them so hard they had no fixed name. We have to keep the Mysterium exclusive whether we want to or not."

"Did Coralline get hit by all that?"

"She was a bystander so she got the bystander dose. She swore off magic and only kinda came back last year. Narkissa got punished, too, and they broke up mostly amicably. Kaitlin moved to Concordia City if memory serves. Never heard from her again."

"Shack sighted," Sacred said. "Remind me to share my war stories sometime. I'm ready to dish out some of the harmless ones. I was told that'll be good for me."

Theo brushed his hand against the back of Keith's. "You really took a gamble on me. Thank you."

Keith waved him off. "Nah, Mel told me you're head over heels for my pretty face. And you were in such deep shit you'd have agreed to anything that helps."

Theo laughed. "Or you could have just taken the compliment."

    "I ...
