"I'm her bodyguard," Brian said. "I'm coming."

"I'll be fine," Amy said, and followed the three school officials into the building, leaving Brian behind.

They ushered her directly into the principal's office and left her to herself for a few minutes. Eventually, the counselor came back with a large tarp.

"This is all I could find to cover you up, until we're able to get you home and adequately dressed," she said.

"No thanks," Amy answered. "I'm fine like this."

The counselor looked at her as if she'd not even spoken the same language.

"I, uh...maybe one of the other students has an extra coat or something. We could ask around?"

"I don't want anything to cover up," Amy told her. "I came to school like this on purpose."

The counselor did seem to register the idea this time. She asked, "What is your name?"

Amy told her.

"I'll be back shortly," the counselor said, and backed out of the room. A short time later, the principal, vice principal, and counselor all came in together again. The principals were older men, and the counselor was a middle-aged woman. Amy had never directly talked to any of them before, although she knew who they were from assemblies and the school paper and all that stuff.

"I've called your mother to come pick you up," the principal said. "Obviously, you can't attend school dressed...as you are. And if you're refusing to ...

Amy listened out of respect, but obviously she had some objections. When it seemed like the principal was done, she opened her mouth to speak.

"I don't really care what possessed you to do it," the principal said. "But I'm running a respectable establishment here, and I won't put up with the likes of you drawing news attention to my school for this kind of nonsense."

"Respectfully, sir..." Amy started, but the principal stormed out of the room before she could get much out.

The vice principal then said, "You will wait here until your mother comes to pick you up." Then he turned his attention to the counselor. "Please try to convince her to cover up."

He left, too.

The counselor sat behind the principal's desk and looked at Amy, pointedly maintaining eye contact as if she was told looking away would lead to her execution.

"Do you want to talk about this?" she asked.

"I'd love to talk about this," she said. "With the principal."

"He's not really in the mood to listen, but I am," the counselor said.

"You realize that what I'm doing is legal, right?" Amy asked.

"I mean I'd like to understand why you're doing this. What do you think you're getting out of it, and how can we help you come to a place where you can express yourself without causing a ...
