"Can I sleep with you, Davey, please?" she asked.

I turned over then and could make her out from the residual light up from the kitchen stove and a nightlight she always kept on in the front room. I could see she was in one of her long, flannel nightgowns.

I flipped the spread and sheet back in invitation.

"I've been so lonely," she said very softly as she climbed in beside me.

"I know," I said, pulling her to me and kissing her forehead.

"No more," I said, "I'm home now."

She pulled me to her then, the embrace hard, almost desperate.

"I'm so glad," she said.

I held her to me then. Even in her long flannel nightgown I couldn't help but be aware of the soft, warm woman in my arms.

But nothing happened.
