... turned in the opposite direction. Bonnie said, "It's not far. We can just walk," as she headed towards the road that led off campus towards State Street where all the clubs are. I asked if that was where we were going and Bonnie answered, "Not quite that far."

That's when I guessed we might be going to the Faculty Club, but I couldn't reconcile that with our preparations for the evening. I asked Bonnie if that was our destination and she confirmed that I had was correct.

After a short walk, we arrived at the mansion that housed the Faculty Club. I had been there once before, for a freshman mixer sponsored by the School of Architecture and Design.

A doorman opened the front door, admitting us into a large entryway with curving staircases on each side leading to the upper floors. He directed us to a table tucked under the stairway to the left. Three women were sitting there, and as we approached the woman on the left stood to greet us.

She looked to be in her early fifties. Her face was tanned like someone who spent a lot of time participating in outdoor sports. I could tell that she was full figured, but not fat. She wore a tight, white, cashmere sweater, a loose, pleated skirt, and stylish boots with three-inch heels. As she came around the table to greet us, I could see that she wasn't wearing a bra by the gentle sway of her generous breasts.

She introduced herself as Regina Bernstein, and told us the other two women were Professor Chen and Mrs. Brightling. ...
... She asked our names and checked them off on a list. She directed the girls into the parlor through the large open double doors directly across from the entrance. Then she told me to follow her saying, "You're the last candidate to arrive."

I was pondering the word, 'candidate' as she led me through a door behind the table. I found myself in a small sitting room, and as I looked around the room, I counted eight other people.

As I found a seat, Regina stood in the center of the room and said, "Greetings. Before we begin, I have to ask each of you to sign one of these non-disclosure agreements. By signing, you agree not to divulge any information about the organization sponsoring tonight's event without the permission of a full member. If you violate this agreement, you are subject to sanctions up to and including expulsion for students or discharge for faculty members. If you do not wish to sign one of these agreements, please exit through the doors where you came in."

No one left, and everyone signed the forms Regina presented to them. I noticed that she counter signed each form as she received it. When she had collected all the forms and tucked them into a folder, she stood in the middle of the room and said, "Welcome to this meeting of the Solemn Fellowship."

I was familiar with the Solemn Fellowship, but that was the last thing I expected to hear. As far as I knew it was a fraternal club, patterned after the Masons, that did charitable works.
