Miguel and his two cousins... Raul and Pablo... were taken to the US as young boys, where they quickly became very proficient in English and learned many traditional American customs. But they found themselves mired in the relative mediocrity and boredom of life in the tiny town of El Paso, so they quickly grew into troubled teens... with an edge... always looking for the easy way out, while pushing against the boundaries of acceptable behavior.

When they were in their early twenties, the three of them moved back to Mexico, deciding they preferred the unbridled bustle of Mexico City to what they’d experienced in the aimless depths of west Texas.

Once they arrived in Mexico City, it didn’t take long for Miguel to come up with a money-making idea.... he decided to utilize the corruption and chaos of Mexico’s largest city to launch a tourist-kidnapping ‘business’. His cousins were easily convinced, and.... with Miguel as the leader.... the three of them decided to focus on an affluent section of the big city called Polanco. It was often referred to as the “Beverly Hills of Mexico City”, and rich tourists from all over the world... especially Americans... typically vacationed there to enjoy expensive shopping, exquisite dining, and top-of-the-line accommodations.

Miguel figured that virtually all Americans vacationing in this part of Mexico City, and shopping in Polanco, were extremely wealthy.... and kidnapping them and getting them to pay a ransom was easier and more ...

... lucrative than finding actual jobs. The three cousins had been doing this for nearly six years now, and it had turned out to be as easy... and even more profitable... than Miguel had predicted. The cousins often commented to each other about how their move back to Mexico had been the best decision they’d ever made.

Pablo and Raul were both married, and... with the money they got from this kidnapping scheme... they had nice houses in a comfortable subdivision just outside of downtown.... their wives had no idea where their money came from.... and didn’t want to know. For families living in one of Mexico’s cartel-controlled cities, it was best not to ask.

Miguel was still single, although he had more female companionship than he could keep track of, and had purchased a small villa in a nice neighborhood a few miles further outside of downtown. This is where they took the kidnap victims while they waited for the ransom to be collected.... they called it the ‘safe house’.
