    Chapter 6

I had to do some research before I started the job.

Although I has a PE degree it hadn't involved field hockey, but besides learning everything a coach needed to know about the sport I also had to get to know what I could about the players before I met them.

All I had besides the roster were the sparse notes left behind by the former coaches.

I couldn't help but notice one of the players was called Jenny, but I didn't think anything of it.

After all it was a fairly common name.

As part of my coaching duties I had to teach a couple of PE classes besides coaching the team after school.

Before my first class Sylvia popped into my office to see how I was getting along, and she had a little surprise for me.

After the preliminary chit chat she got right to the point and told me, "Your first class is next period and I thought it best to warn you."

The first bell had just rung, and the girls were already filtering into the locker room when I asked dubiously, "Warn me about what?"

About that time, almost as if on cue, a student appeared in the doorway of my office.

At first I didn't recognize her with her hair down, glasses on, and an actual school uniform on, but as soon as she spoke my jaw dropped when I identified her.

"Hi coach." Jenny said bashfully.

Before I could even pick my jaw up off the floor Sylvia explained, "She's in your first class. I thought it would be better to find out now instead of out there."

    ... out." I finally managed, after nodding hello to Jenny.

"Why don't you go dress out for class." Sylvia suggested to Jenny.

"Yes ma'am." she giggled, flitting away and calling gayly, "See you on the field coach."

Once she was gone I turned to Sylvia and hissed, "Jesus Christ Sylvia!"

"I didn't know she was a student." she instantly replied, throwing up her hands. "I met her in a pub. I didn't find out until afterwards."

"When were you gonna tell me?!" I demanded, struggling to keep my voice down.

"Now?" she said sheepishly.

Sylvia went on to explain that she'd worked at the school for years and hadn't ever seen Jenny before that night so there was every chance that I might never see her, but then she'd found out that not only was Jenny on the field hockey team but she was in my first PE class.

"You didn't tell her I was Sabine's father did you?" I whispered urgently.

"No." she replied sardoniclly. "Why, do you think I should?"

"Okay smart-ass." I chuckled, rolling my eyes. "It's just that Sabine doesn't want any of her classmates to know."

"You'd think she was embarrassed by you." she said with a wry smile. "What is she, a teenager or something?"

We both got a chuckle out that, and after a quick kiss goodbye we headed to our respective classes.

The day progressed and I didn't see Sabine, but after last bell, before practice I got another surprise.

"Hi coach, I'm Mary-Beth!" sang the buxom flaxen haired beauty as she blew into my office, ...
