Clatter – crash – thud scared me out of my wits Saturday morning as I rushed to the bathroom.

    “Loretta, Baby!”

“DON’T COME IN HERE! I’m fine. My crutch fell, I’m okay,” Loretta reassured me.

Then I noticed her crutches were not in their spot. I sat on the edge of the bed, waiting for my heartbeat to return to normal. Maybe I’m overprotective, but I’m not changing.

With my heart rate back to normal, I went to the kitchen to start the coffee. I got the cups from the cabinet, and I noticed they were in order according to size. I wonder how that happened, I laughed to myself.

The coffee’s gentle “ding” let me know it was finished. I filled our cups and went to the bedroom. I peered into the room to be certain it was all clear. My girl was sitting up in bed. I handed her the cup, acting as though I was afraid of being yelled at.

“I didn’t mean to yell, Sweetie. It was, well, I was in no position to open the door,” Loretta was blushing.

“I heard the crash. I didn't know what happened, I was worried,” I told her.

“I know, and I love you for that. Now come in and let’s have our coffee. See, I even have my makeup on,” Loretta teased.

“Our reservations are at seven. Is there anything you want to do with the apartment? I know you were still thinking about the large picture. Have you decided?”

“Yes, I was going to leave it alone. I like the smaller pictures there. And I want to save room for pictures of us. We have a few, but I’m sure we will take more. ...
... Are you happy with it; that’s important to me." Loretta’s tone was serious.

“Honestly, Baby, I love the way you have things done up. I’m sorry the curtains weren’t large enough, do you still want to see if you can find another panel to make them longer?” I hoped her answer would be ‘no’.

“I like the curtains in the bedrooms. Maybe we will give the other ones to a thrift store.” She sipped her coffee.

We sat in bed enjoying our coffee and talked about how things were going at work. I got up and got a refill. After we finished that, we decided to get up. Loretta grabbed a robe, and I threw on a pair of boxers. We made it as far as the living room. Loretta was decorating.

I opened the front curtains. The day was bright and sunny. There were a few little white clouds that paraded by our window. I put on some light toe-tapping music, and Loretta hummed along.

When I sat down, Loretta kissed me and put her head on my shoulder. She was in a quiet mood. Her heart was happy, and she hummed to the tunes.

After a while, she sat up, and she had her soft but serious expression. She kissed my cheek and smiled.

“Michael, I was thinking as you opened the curtains. I would do that and try to hold onto my crutches. In the mornings, I would have coffee at the table with my crutches. When I would put my prosthesis on, sometimes, I left the socks on the vanity. I had to get it and hop back to the bed.

It was I had to do this, I had to do that, I had to get my socks from the ...
