... sure it was because I was so distracted," he looked pointedly at Ashley in her skimpy attire, "but - and I'm really sorry guys - I forgot to stop. We got no food, and no beer.” “Well, that sucks,” Brad said disgustedly. “How far we got to backtrack to get something?” “Yeah, how far?” Ashley repeated. “I'm not going to make it a lot longer.” “Hey, I said I was sorry. Besides, it's not all that far anyway. Maybe five miles or so, just before we turned off the main highway.” Jarrad continued, “We can even eat there. They got hamburgers to die for.” *** Back in the truck they made their way to the main highway and pulled into a place known as The Outpost. It was in such a secluded spot there couldn't have been anything near it for at least a mile. There might have been a car out back belonging to the owner, but there were none in the front. It was open, but looked deserted. “How does this place manage to stay open?” Brad asked. “Owner lives here, does everything himself and doesn't care if he only gets a few customers a day.” Jarrad led the way in. It was part bar, part restaurant and part grocery store. There was only person in the place, probably the owner. He was sitting in the corner looking through a girlie magazine. Three of us, four days, and we can eat most anything.” He looked at Brad and Ashley. Both nodded their agreement. “And give us a couple cases of Bud Light too.” All this time the owner continued to stare at Ashley. Those shorts are so short and no way she's wearing a bra. “We're hungry too,” Ashley chimed, blushing slightly at the attention the owner was paying her. “Our friend here says you make some pretty great hamburgers.” She watched as he gave her another, quite deliberate, all over up and down look. “That I do,” admitted the owner, still without looking her in the eyes. “Three house specials, that's with fries, coming up,” he said. “I'll do that stuff first and while you're eating, I'll get the groceries together.” What's she doing with two guys? She gonna do 'em both? Lucky guys! “You want some beers with the specials?” All three nodded. “Bud Light okay? Ain't got much else.” All nodded again. “Well you just sit yerselves down in that booth over there, and I'll get it all out to ya's in just a minute.” He turned his gaze away from Ashley and headed for the kitchen. Once seated in the booth, Brad quietly said, “He never even asked how old we were.” “Right,” Jarrad answered, also in a low tone of voice. “That's why I wanted to stop here. Too far out for the state guys to even check. I had my first beer here when I was sixteen.” “Sixteen?” Ashley ...
