... couches, at the end nearest the windows. Brad and Jarrad were on opposite couches, at the end nearest the fireplace. “The weather today looks perfect for our hike,” Jarrad observed. “I agree,” said Brad. “Looks great.” “There is a place I've always wanted to go, but it's rained every time I've been here before.” Jarrad continued, enthusiastically. “My uncle said it's less than five miles down an old logging road. It'll be a perfect hike for today.” “You mean they got topless bars out here?” Ashley asked. “They certainly do!” Jarrad chimed, “And I understand you're the feature entertainer.” He grinned in Ashley's direction. “In your dreams maybe,” Ashley countered. “Ah yes and such wonderful dreams.” Jarrad rolled his eyes and licked his lips. “Unfortunately not. It's just a waterfall. But my uncle still talks of it as if it is the most beautiful sight in the world.” He hesitated, then added, “Of course he's never met you.” Ashley blushed. “Oh please keep it up,” Ashley urged. “Flattery just might get you... uh who knows what.” Jarrad looked in Brad's direction, wondering how he was reacting to the impromptu exchange he was having with Ashley. He couldn't discern the meaning of the look on Brad's face, so to be on the safe side, switched back to talking about the waterfall. “Yeah, it drops forty or fifty feet into a small pond before running down a small stream to the lake.” “Okay, so how do we get there? And what do we do once we're there?” Brad asked. Everyone listened as ...
... Jarrad explained. “You know those stairs that go down the hill from where the car is parked. Well they go down some twenty or thirty feet to an old logging road that winds around along the side of the hill for ten miles or so and eventually comes out at the edge of the lake. About half way along the road, there's a path that takes you about a hundred yards off the main trail to the waterfall.” “So what do we do when we get there?” Brad repeated. “Picnic, swim, take pictures - who knows? Whatever we want.” “I like it,” Ashley chirped. “You said it was all clear trail?” “Right, all clear trail. No underbrush to cut through, just a road through the woods. People still use it once in while to get to campsites down by the lake.” “Not steep, though?” Brad questioned. “So we get back almost as easily as we get there?” “Cars and trucks come back up it, so it can't be much of an incline. I would guess, maybe two hours to get there and a little more, maybe two and a half, to get back.” Ashley was quick on the details. “So if we get out of here before ten, we should be there by noon, have a picnic, go for a swim, take some pictures, and still be back here by six.” “Sounds like a winner,” agreed Brad. “Only that business about swimming – mountain stream – probably too cold to do any swimming.” “Probably true,” agreed Jarrad, “but it'll still make for a fun day. Everyone okay?” He got a head nod and yes from Ashley and the same from Brad. “Alright, let's do it then.” He looked at his watch. ...
