It's now three weeks into the semester. I think I have a good idea as to what's what with "college life".

Figuring out who's who is going to take more time.

I have become friendly with some of my classmates that share classes with me...both guys and girls.

It's interesting that there are girls actually interested in business as there are two or three in my accounting and economics classes.

Along with a few of my male classmates, we would gather after a class for coffee and conversation.

I enjoyed their company and they seemed to enjoy mine.

In the interests of transparency I am an immigrant's kid. Both my parents came from Italy so I'm first generation American. My father works in a factory and my mother works at a small greeting card print shop. They aren't rich by any standard but we have a nice...but modest...house. It's always neat as a pin.

We always have clean clothes and good food.

In contrast, many of my classmates are here because the summer camps are closed and the parents need someplace to stash the kids while they go on with whatever lives they lead.

Envious...yeah...maybe a bit...but...I learned early on to make the best of what I had.

Anyway...I did get a boost in popularity...or notoriety...when it became known that I was a pretty good Pinochle player.

I learned it from my parents.

I happened to walk into the student union to get a coffee and saw a bunch of my classmates around a table, watching a card game in progress. I ...
... saw it was Pinochle. I was standing by one of the girl players. She was having a bit of trouble following the sequence of play. On one trick she hesitated as to which card to play. I casually...and out of habit I guess...leaned over and pointed to the card she should play next. She looked at me...I just smiled and nodded. She took the trick. I stayed and advised her which card to play at each trick. She and her partner took pretty much each trick and won the game.

The cards were dealt again. She stood up, handed me her hand and said "here...you play...I'll watch and learn...". The game progressed. My partner and I took every trick. My reputation was made.

Now then...you may wonder where my roommate was during these first few weeks.

My roommate...interesting situation...nice enough guy...not many shared interests.

We never had any type on in-depth conversation about anything...classes...hobbies...family life.

He was one of the "winter camp kids" as I called them...(not to their faces...I may be dumb but I ain't stupid...).

He did say repeatedly how much he disliked being there...how he disliked his teachers...the food...pretty much everything about his life.

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that one Wednesday afternoon when I returned to our dorm room to find all his belongings gone. I thought someone was playing a nasty prank on us but none of my stuff was missing.

I found a note from my roommate saying he finally had enough of this place and was ...
