    ... a third of it.

“I second that,” said Jason in his loud voice, “at least we are going to be at this one. How come we were not at your last one?”

“Work, mate,” I replied. “You were away on ops and you Ian were off training some foreign army somewhere. I forget which one.”

“Yeah, sounds about right,” they both muttered.

We chatted for the rest of the evening; the guys were disappointed when I alternated to soft drinks and even at one point ordered a cup of coffee but by this point, I had made plain that my drinking habits had not changed since I left the army and were not going to change even on the eve of my wedding. Thankfully, both were also of the opinion that we were all too old to be doing silly things like chaining me naked to a lamppost and as they were not going to get me drunk, shaving my eyebrows off was also off the table. I was called boring and various other names during the evening, but I always pointed out that it was me who was marrying a woman half my age and not them who were now both single.

“Yeah, about that,” said Jason, who was swaying in his seat after I had brought up the subject of Jade for what seemed the hundredth time.

“Go on,” I answered, wondering what silly question was going to be brought up now.

“Does she have a sister or a best friend who fancies a good time? I am single, you know.”

“Well, she doesn’t have a sister, I can tell you that, best friends wise, from what I can tell they are far more sophisticated and ...
... discerning than to date a clapped-out, old guy such as you.”

“Ouch, that was a low blow. Where’s Amy?”

    “No, don’t go there,”

“What?” protested Jason, “I meant I had not seen my favourite little girl in ages.”

“Just so long as we are clear,” I warned, “she is coming up this evening from London, she couldn’t get away from work any earlier, apparently. Oh, and she is bringing her new boyfriend.”

“Interesting. Have you met him?” asked Jason.

“Not yet. He is a work colleague, that is all I know.”

“Hey,” piped up Ian, “how about we head out and see if we can find any half-decent woman?”

I shook my head. “No thanks, but I am not stopping either of you from going and trying your luck. I suspect seeing as it is nearly midnight and both of you are pissed you won’t pull and since the rather bored barman sitting on the stool behind the bar is wanting to go home, may I suggest you go back to your rooms and make love to your hand.”

“You know what? You are a boring fucker sometimes. How the hell did we ever become best pals?” Jason mocked.

“Oh, I don’t know, probably something to do with spending so long together in the military, you know once you have seen somebody shit in a bag, you really do become friends for life.”

Jason let out a long laugh, and threw an arm around Ian. “You know what, he is right, we honestly couldn’t be more different. We did selection together. I didn’t think he would make it through the first day, never mind make it to the TQ phase. He ...
