... spent a few minutes thinking about their schedules; Tracy decided she could fit everything in if she skipped lunch and Kyle looked for flight options to get home earlier if work allowed. Friday morning Tracy dressed quickly and hurried Emily and Kevin along, making it to their school 10 minutes ahead of schedule. Her efforts ended up being wasted as an accident blocked off 3 out of 4 lanes on the highway between school and work, costing her 20 minutes. She found Eric and asked for her assignment, diving in as soon as she had it in hand. Around half past noon, three hours into the task Eric had handed her, Tracy looked ahead to see how much work was left to do; what she saw let her relax a bit for the first time since she'd jumped out of bed that morning. Most of what was left to be done on the document she was working on was standard boilerplate; she was sure she could finish in two hours, possibly less. Now that she was confident she could finish her assignment with time to spare, she kicked herself for not bringing a lunch to work. She doubted she had enough time to go out for something, and the single cup of yogurt she'd had for breakfast wasn't going to get her through the day, so she headed for the vending machines in the break room. Carol replied, "As far as I can see, it;s just we three and Eric," Carol replied, "and we're headed out to lunch; care to join us?" Carol and Nancy were known to take long lunches, so as unexciting as her vending machine lunch was, Tracy had to turn down the invitation, saying, "I wish I could, but I've got to finish something and also need to leave early. Maybe another time!" Tracy lingered a whole 5 minutes eating what passed as her lunch, then brought a printout of what she'd done so far to Eric to be sure she'd be able to finish the document in the time she had left, reminding him that she needed to leave no later than 3:00. "Looks like you're on track," Eric told her, marking up a handful of edits on the print copy. As she was leaving his office he told her, "I'm about to go get a bite to eat and run an errand, but I'm sure I'll be back before you leave, around 2:30 I'm guessing. If I'm delayed and you need to go, just email me the finished file and leave a print copy on my desk." Tracy settled in to wrap up her assignment, making short work of the markups Eric had added; she then found various documents from which to borrow the big chunks of boilerplate making up the last third or so of the document she was working on and pasted them in. At 12:45 she heard the chime of an elevator arriving and looked up just in time to see Eric leave. She scanned the work she'd done ...
