"What," she sniffed, "you mean me and Kayla? We hadn't even met before."

"That's not what I meant..." And there I stopped myself.

After a pause, she teased me back:

"Do you WANT me to plan these evenings?"

I didn't answer, but simply ran my hand on her thigh. I felt so much love for her, like I'd never felt before.

EPILOGUE

Ben and Kayla got married later that year. Marie and I attended. There was a general sense of understanding that what happened that night was a one-time thing only. After marriage, they moved to a new house way across town from ours. That wedding day was the last time that the four of us would be together.

Ben and I would continue to meet occasionally, sometimes with Kayla. They always seemed so happy with each other. Thus, it was a shock to me, when Ben and Kayla divorced after three years of marriage.

By the following year, Marie and I would welcome our baby boy, and that simply meant fewer outings for us. My wife never joined me anymore whenever I went to see Ben. She considered these to be "boys' nights" and that I should go out and "have fun, but not TOO much fun," with a wink. I don't think she's actively avoiding him, it's just that she would rather I take turns at babysitting, so she can have her own nights out with friends.
