... class salutatorian and had to give a speech at graduation. I'm pretty good with words and offered to help, but she told me I had already done enough for her speech and she didn't need additional help. In fact, she never worked on it in front of me, nor in front of Bobbie and Stephanie either. I guessed I'd have to wait just like everybody else to hear it. Roman Alexander Ellis was just shy of a year when I carried him in to the gym behind Bobbie and Stephanie on graduation day. We kept getting held up as every other woman we encountered along the way had to stop us and admire the baby. Elinore had the second speech of the ceremony, and I had to smile when I read the program and saw her speech was entitled, "There's no 'I' in Team." The gist of the speech was about how a team effort can overcome individual weaknesses, and the importance of everyone rowing in the same direction. She used the differences in our family as an example of how four--now five--individuals can be one successful unit. I'm pretty sure I grew another inch that afternoon. There weren't many dry eyes in the house as Elinore talked. It was a whole family outing when we took Elinore to Arizona State University for her freshman year of college. We left Santa Fe five days early and did all sorts of "touristy" things before leaving her. As we were about to drive off, we lined up in front of her for final hugs. I was last on line, and as I reflected back on it later I realized the order was not ...

"I know it wasn't a priority for you while I was at home, but now that I'm gone... Mom has a good woman. You need one, too." "I'll try, baby, but I can't promise," I responded just as quietly. "Good women like Stephanie don't grow on trees, you know." I suppose it was only natural that Roman called me Daddy as he first started to talk, and my heart always seemed to grow when he did that. What surprised me was that he called both Bobbie and Stephanie Mommy... and they somehow always knew to which one he was referring. I couldn't hear any discernible difference in his pronunciation of the word, but the two women somehow had it figured. Two years after graduating from Arizona State University, Elinore gave me the extreme thrill of being able to walk her down the aisle to be married. That was just about the only thing I had to do for the wedding as my daughter, Bobbie and Stephanie did all the heavy lifting... all while smiling and laughing. All I did was pay my share and keep 7-year-old Roman out of the way. Jack Lassiter seemed to be a very nice young man, but that still didn't stop me from threatening him with physical violence if he ever laid a hand on my little girl. I told him I would never interfere in his marriage, except if he ever abused Elinore. When he said he understood and agreed, it was in a choked voice... ...
