... displayed now. "Wow! You surprised me!"
"Sorry. I didn't mean to scare you."
"Just doing some homework."
"On a Friday night?"
"Yeah...well I wanted to get a jump on it while it was still fresh." She ran her hand through her hair. Her face was still flushed, but she was collecting herself better now, even if her lie was not thoroughly convincing, and she could tell that Luke was not convinced.
"OK. Again. Sorry to scare you. I was trying to be quiet cuz I didn't want to wake Ethan." They both knew by now that Luke very likely realized what she'd been doing.
"Sure. Yeah. That's OK. No problem. Just gave me a start is all."
"Well...go ahead and finish up what you were working on. I was just heading to the kitchen. Can I get you anything?" Luke paused for a moment. "Did you notice I've got a bottle of sparkling wine in there now? I'll pour you a glass if you'd like."
"Yeah. That'd be great. I'll just be a minute."
Luke left for the kitchen, to open the wine, and to give her a minute to collect herself. He took two glasses into the living room and sat down at one end of the couch, leaving one glass on the coffee table at the other end. "That's right. If it's not from the Champagne region of France, they have to call it sparking wine."
"Why did you have these bottles? Were you saving them for something?"
"I think I was saving them for you."
"For me?"
"Yes. If it's OK with you, I want to celebrate how wonderful you've been for Ethan and me, over all these years, and what an amazing, really impressive person you've become. I want to drink a toast to you."
"To me?"
"To Kyra." He raised his glass. She raised hers to meet his. "Wonderful, beautiful, amazing Kyra. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"Thank you, Luke." She smiled, sincerely touched, and took a sip from her glass. Then she raised it toward his again. "And to Luke, the best boss a girl could ever have." They clinked glasses. "I like you so much I'd probably come do this for free." She took a drink. He did too. Then she giggled, "Oops. I probably shouldn't have said that. Now you won't want to ...
