... caller ID came up as 'MOM'.
Connor really wasn't sure whether to answer. But if it turned out to be an emergency he knew he'd regret it. Unsure of whether he was doing the right thing he accepted the call.
They say that if you want to know what your wife's going to look like in twenty years then take a look at her mother. The resemblance between Chelsea and the woman who appeared on the cracked iPhone screen was uncanny. Chelsea's mom looked more like her older sister.
"Hi," Connor began, slightly thrown by the image. "Mrs Cartwright?"
"Yes," was the reply. Followed immediately by, "Is Chelsea alright?"
"Oh, er yes. She's at work. At the gym. I'm just upgrading her phone for her. I'm Connor, Connor Carter, her boyfriend."
Chelsea's Mom looked slightly confused.
"She hasn't mentioned you before."
"We've not been going out long," Connor admitted.
"To be honest I always assumed that she and her flatmate, Presley were an item."
Connor chuckled. It didn't come as a surprise. The same thought had crossed his mind in the beginning.
"Chelsea and Presley are best friends but I don't think there were ever going to be wedding bells, Mrs Cartwright."
"Linda, please," she replied. "So what do you do Connor?"

"Chelsea's got my phone today. I can give you the number if you want to call her. Or she'll be back around five and I can ask her to call you, if you'd like."
"The two of you live together then?" Linda asked.
"For part of the week, while Presley's away," Connor admitted. "We're still working it out to be honest."
Connor realised that as introductions went this wasn't ideal, but then Linda's approach seemed to soften.
"How is she?" Linda asked.
"She's happy, cheeky and full of life. I've never seen someone eat so much yet look so petite. I'm not really sure if that answers your question though."
"That sounds like Chelsea," Linda laughed. "If you could convince her to come home and visit her parents then her father and I would be grateful. Tell her we'll pay for her flight. We know money is tight and we're not in a position to help much but it would mean such a lot to her father and me to see her. We'd love to meet you too of course."
"I'll see what I can do," Connor agreed, "and I'll ask Chelsea to call you when she gets home."
"Thank you Connor. It was nice talking to you."
"And you."
When the call ended, Connor reflected on what Linda had said. He wondered how long it had been since Chelsea had seen her parents. It made him think of his own parents. He was a bad son. He would need to put that right soon. But for now he had to press on with upgrading Chelsea's phone before someone else decided to call ...
