... setting up my new phone," she said giving Connor a peck on the cheek
"No problem. I'll take you through everything else after dinner. It's not my business, but why don't you want to see your family?"
"It's complicated," Chelsea replied, embarrassed.
"I can do complicated," Connor said, not letting up. "Remember, you're talking to the guy who hasn't seen his own parents in over eighteen months."
"My parents didn't want me to move to California," Chelsea began. "I think they thought I wouldn't make it out here and they wanted to protect me from that. I was determined to prove them wrong and I had this idea I wouldn't go back to Milwaukee until I I'd made a success of things."
"I see," Connor offered sympathetically.
"The reality is, they were right. It's been over two years now and I'm no nearer making it here than I was when I arrived. Every month I've just gotten poorer. Now I couldn't afford the flight home, even if I wanted."
Connor could see the tears forming in Chelsea's eyes and gave her a big hug. Chelsea nestled her head in his chest and had a bit of a sob.
"I'm such a failure Connor," she blubbed.

"I'll think about it," Chelsea said in a tone that indicated she wouldn't. She let go of Connor then began to walk away. ...
... "I should go and have shower before dinner."
Chelsea felt stupid. She hadn't meant to lay her problems out in front of Connor. She showered quickly, put on some sweat pants and a top and walked back into the room.
"I'm sorry," she said giving him a hug.
"Don't be," Connor told her.
"After dinner will you sit down and go through my finances with me?" she asked.
"Sure."
"I try not to drink in the week but maybe we could make an exception tonight."
"Good idea."
Connor was a good cook and the Paella went down well, as did the first bottle of chilled Rosé which they shared. After the meal Connor opened a second bottle then began to take Chelsea through the tech he'd set up for her. He was quite surprised how savvy Chelsea was. Sophie had been a complete technophobe. Of all the gadgets he'd bought however, Chelsea loved her watch the most. Connor had never been a fan of smart watches, preferring a classic mechanical timepiece, but he had to admit he could see the attraction of them, especially if you were sporty.
When it came to looking at Chelsea's finances they made a spreadsheet of her incomings and outgoings. She only had one 'incoming', her salary from the gym. $45k wasn't an unreasonable salary for a gym instructor in most places, but in San Francisco, with its high cost of living, it just wasn't enough. Once she'd deducted her rent, her share of the bills on the apartment, repayments on her student loan and interest on her credit card debt, Chelsea ...
