... lingering for a few long seconds, before stepping back and saying loudly, "I'll see you in the morning."
"Yes, bright and early," said Katarinka; it would be early, though the only brightness would be from the few stars which were peeking their way through what promised to be a cloudy night.
In her tower she locked the door, she didn't want one of the maids wandering in by accident and plumping her pillows under the bedding to form a shape which looked somewhat like a sleeping body, she blew out the lamp and sat in the chair, her sword laid bare across her legs. She closed her eyes and gently dozed, relying on her instincts to awaken her instantly when needed.
It was an hour later, maybe a little more, she was woken. The scrape of the key in the door was so quiet that if there had been any noise outside it would have been inaudible, but in the stillness of the night, it was like a clamour to someone with Katarinka's senses. She took hold of the sword hilt and waited. The door opened, again almost silently. The outside corridor was almost dark, but not so much as the room and a gloomy light entered, in which a shadow could be seen of a man creeping, followed by a second -- both carrying short swords, then a third with an axe.
They were moving over to the bed, the axe man raising his weapon over the bedding to strike.
Before he did one of his fellows realised the ruse, "It's not her," he whispered in a violent gasp.
It was too late to stop the axe man's ...
... downward blow and there was a low thump as he hit the cushions, immediately realising his mistake, "The fuck..." he began, looking up.
Like a shadow of the dead rising Katarinka was up from her seat, sword in hand moving towards them. The first swordsman, the one who realised it was a trap, was looking the wrong way as if he expected her to be hiding in the wardrobe. He probably didn't even realise she was behind him before her sword cleaved his head, killing him so instantly that he didn't even make a sound as he fell.
The other two were, if not wholly professional killers, not absolute amateurs either. They didn't waste time on further shouts of surprise or discussion on what needed to be done, but split axe man to the right, the other to the left, jumping on and over the bed so he was approaching her from one side as his surviving partner moved in from the other.
They attacked in unison, one swinging his axe low, the other stabbing at her chest with his sword.
But Katarinka was no first-timer either. She pirouetted gracefully away from the axe, whilst parrying the thrust, the clang of metal as the two swords clashed the only sound in the room.
In turn, she did a quick stab at the swordsman. He ducked back, grunting slightly as the sword sped by inches from his stomach.
He was in front of her now, momentarily blocking his comrade and Katarinka took advantage, swinging and thrusting her swords in a series of quick movements. The man parried them, badly, but ...
