... the horse down as the blackness engulfed them. A tracker with even medium skills would have been able to follow them, but she was betting that Hugh had none to hand with even the basic knowledge and that the darkness would conceal them long enough to get way into the forests before, he could find a hunter who'd be able to pick up their trail. If she was really lucky they'd not even go down this road, but she suspected that sooner or later Hugh would realise he had taken the wrong turn and spread out his forces. Luck was what they needed now...
The horse was barely walking now and Katarinka dismounted. "You stay up there," she told the teen as she made ready to get off, "I'll lead you both."
She walked them further and further into the woods, glancing up every now and then when there was a gap in the canopy of leaves to check the stars and direction. A mile she walked, two, three, deeper and deeper into the dark forest where no human would go. A wolf crossed her path but ignored her, an owl tweeted overhead perhaps marking her passing, a firefly sparked in the darkness momentarily lighting the way. It was still cold, at least to someone who'd never spent a night outside a room with a fireplace, stoked by servants -- even on her infrequent trips outside the castles and mansions she'd been brought up in, any journey had been carefully planned so that there was a roadside tavern at the end of each day's journey. Still, she could hardly remain under the blanket all day, so gingerly she moved, groaning at the stiffness in her limbs and unsure what of it was caused by the cold and what was the result of sleeping on a patch of damp mossy earth rather than a feather bed.
Despite that she felt happier on waking than she had for months, her Mama's suffering had ended and she was with the Goddess now, she had escaped her evil stepfather's clutches and she would no longer have to marry Sir Belgrothian who was in whatever hell his Gods devised for slugs like him. But most of all she was with her Grandmom. The teen sat ignoring the twinges in her limbs and looked across to where her Grandmom was practising some sword strokes against an imaginary (or at least invisible) opponent. You could take the thrall out of Amazonia, but you could ...
