"Bitch."
I heard him say it. Not to my face, of course, but behind my back. His fragile ego couldn't consider for a millisecond that he wasn't God's gift to womankind, so being turned down flat couldn't possibly be anything but my fault. Whatever. If I confronted him, he'd deny saying it, but he's not worth the time it would take. No, I am here in this watering hole on a mission of my own - to find and conquer (at least for a night) a hetero woman.
And this watering hole is where you find them. They're looking for a man, but if I find them first, well... that's the thrill of the hunt, isn't it?
That one there in the corner. The shy-looking one standing next to a table nursing a glass of white, who keeps looking around, like she's expecting someone. I approached her from her blind side. She started when I greeted her.
"Hi! You look like you're expecting someone."
She turned and smiled when she saw my friendly face. She was a few inches shorter than me and very slight of frame. Probably needed to have a sandwich and go to the gym.
"Yeah, I'm meeting a guy, but he's an hour late."
I frowned, "Oh. That's terrible! What an asshole! Do you know him or...?"
"No, I found him online and we agreed to meet here."
"Wow. And you look like you went all out for him. Love that dress."
She looked down at herself for a split second and back at me, smiling and blushing a little. I continued.
"My name's Amy. What's yours?"
"Kate. What brings you ...
... here?"
"Oh, I'm just looking. You know. Let me buy you a drink and keep you company. What are you having?"
She looked at her nearly empty glass, "Oh, Chardonnay..."
I turned and grabbed a passing waiter and ordered two, giving him two twenties. Service was swift. She took a sip and said, "Thank you."
I smiled and said, "You're welcome."
We continued a little small talk. She was single, awkward and shy. She never dated in high school or college, keeping her nose stuffed in her books. So, they gave her a sheepskin and she got a dead-end accounting job. Naturally, she thought a man would be the solution to all her trouble, but lacked the first idea how to find a good one (as if).
I got another glass of wine into her and very, very gradually shifted myself closer to her as she sipped her way through the conversation. I commiserated with her about the dating scene, but kept steering the conversation in the same direction. At long last, she arrived where I wanted her.
"I just don't know what to do anymore." And looked down at the table.
"Oh, don't be upset. It's going to be ok, Kate. I just know it."
And I made my move: I put my hand under her chin, lifted it up, and kissed her softly on the lips.
Time froze. This was the moment. I've been here many times before. Sometimes they react badly and bolt. Those are the ones that got away. But there's always some level of confusion. But when it works, the confusion is not immediately followed by fear or revulsion.
Kate ...
